A handheld pneumatic tire pressure gauge includes a substantially hollow tubular body section having a gauge head at one end and an open end opposite the gauge head. The gauge head is configured to operatively connect to a pneumatic tire. An elongated measurement scale is slidable positioned within the body section and is configured to be forced out of the body section through the open end. The measurement scale extends outwardly though the open end a distance proportional with a measured air pressure. The measurement scale includes a series of rectangular markers spaced apart at intervals and arranged in groups of common hue along its length.

A method for enhancing situational awareness in a transportation vehicle includes strategically locating sensory communication devices on the vehicle. The sensory communication devices are operatively connecting to a user network. At least one of the sensory communication devices is activated upon a triggering event. A vehicle data signal including vehicle information is transmitted from the activated sensory communication device to the user network. Using a computing device, the user network is accessed to receive the vehicle information transmitted by the activated sensory communication device.

A mechanical gauge includes a stock panel with a first measurement scale, and a slide movably arranged relative to the stock panel. The first measurement scale has a series of marks spaced apart at regular intervals within a region of interest. The slide includes a second measurement scale adapted to selectively overlie the first measurement scale within the region of interest. The second measurement scale has a second series of marks spaced apart at regular intervals corresponding to the first series of marks of the first measurement scale. An elongated measurement probe is affixed to the slide and adapted for selectively extending into a groove formed in the tread of the vehicle tire.
