Disclosed herein are methods of forming substantially crystalline, dense silicon carbide fibers from infusible polysilazane fibers by utilizing a single stage pyrolysis. The pyrolysis is performed using a continuous process in a single furnace with a constant atmospheric condition. Also disclosed are substantially crystalline, dense silicon carbide fibers formed by these methods.

A thermal transport structure having a thermal transport layer and a resin layer is provided. The thermal transport layer may include a first surface and a second surface, and having a thermally conductive material disposed in the thermal transport layer, where the thermally conductive material is oriented in a predetermined direction in order to facilitate heat conduction relative to the predetermined direction. A composition for use as underfill material is provided. The underfill material includes a first curable transparent resin composition and a second curable fluxing resin composition. The first curable resin composition includes at least one aromatic epoxy resin in combination with a solvent, a functionalized colloidal silica dispersion, and at least one other component selected from the group consisting of cycloaliphatic epoxy monomers, aliphatic epoxy monomers, hydroxy aromatic compounds and combinations and mixtures thereof, thereby forming a solvent-modified resin. The second curable fluxing composition includes at least one epoxy resin. The combination of the two resin compositions is useful in producing underfill materials and is suitable for use as an encapsulant for electronic chips.

A method for preparing hydroxyaromatic compounds brominated in the para-position, such as p-bromophenol, is disclosed. The method yields overall high process selectivity through isomeric equilibration and separation of the brominated products, thereby eliminating the need for high para selectivity in the products of catalytic oxybromination reactions of hydroxyaromatic compounds using oxygen, a bromine source, and an acidic medium in the presence of a metal catalyst. Furthermore, the invention provides an efficient method for recycling the metal catalyst, as well as reagents used in the bromination, to further reactions.

Method for production of bis(hydroxy-aromatic)compounds

A method is described for the simultaneous preparation of p-bromophenols and p-benzoquinones, intermediates useful in the preparation of hydroquinones and 4,4&prime;-dihydroxybiphenyls, respectively. Hydroquinones and 4,4&prime;-dihydroxybiphenyls are useful monomers for the preparation of a variety of polymers. The method also comprises reducing the p-benzoquinone to its corresponding hydroquinone in the presence of the p-bromophenol. Limiting the amount of HBr present in the reaction mixture was shown to control the amount of benzoquinone produced. The method also allows for the recycling of many of the reagents used, thereby reducing the cost of producing each monomer.

Method for preparing hydroquinones and dihydroxybiphenyl compounds from mixtures of bromophenols and benzoquinones

A method is described for the simultaneous preparation of 4-bromophenols and p-benzoquinones, intermediates useful in the preparation of hydroquinones and 4,4&prime;-dihydroxybiphenyls respectively. Hydroquinones and 4,4&prime;-dihydroxybiphenyls are useful monomers for the preparation of a variety of polymers. In one example phenol is reacted with in the presence of HBr, a catalytic amount of cupric bromide and a stoichiometric excess of oxygen under relatively mild conditions to provide a mixture of the phenol, 4-bromophenol, and 1,4-benzoquinone. Phenol conversion was 54 percent and selectivities for bromophenol and benzoquinone were 23% and 37% respectively. Limiting the amount of HBr present in the reaction mixture was shown to control the amount of benzoquinone produced.
