A method of controlling an idle speed of an engine of a vehicle, includes the steps of determining that the engine is decelerating to or is operating at a nominal idle speed, determining that a vehicle brake is applied, determining an actual or projected electrical load of at least part of a vehicle electrical system is beyond an electrical load threshold, and increasing the engine speed to or maintaining the speed of the engine at a speed greater than the nominal idle speed range as a function of the electrical load to increase the electrical output of a generator coupled to the engine. The method may include determining that the brake is ceasing to be applied and then decreasing the engine speed to or toward the nominal idle speed.

Rolling engine start-stop (RESS) system and methods for a vehicle include a set of sensors configured to measure a set of operating parameters of the vehicle comprising at least (i) driver input via brake pedal of the vehicle, (ii) vehicle speed, and (iii) a steering angle of the vehicle and a controller configured to, based on the set of operating parameters, determine a target vehicle speed for stopping an engine of the vehicle, and based on the steering angle of the vehicle, selectively stopping the engine of the vehicle when the vehicle speed falls to the determined target vehicle speed, wherein stopping the engine of the vehicle at the determined target vehicle speed decreases noise/vibration/harshness (NVH) caused by stopping the engine.

Techniques for a mild hybrid vehicle utilize a control system for detecting a deceleration fuel shutoff (DFSO) event where fueling to an engine is disabled and in response to detecting the DFSO event: determining a desired pumping loss for the engine based on a parameter of a battery system, the desired pumping loss corresponding to a desired amount of electrical energy that a motor generator unit (MGU) of a belt-driven starter generator (BSG) system will generate to charge the battery system; commanding a throttle valve of the engine to an initial position determined based on the desired engine pumping loss and a speed of the engine; estimating an actual pumping loss of the engine based on an estimated airflow into the engine; and adjusting the position of the throttle valve based on a difference between the desired and actual engine pumping losses.

Engine pump loss control to improve battery system charging and overall vehicle efficiency

Clutch protection systems and methods include calculating a slip of a clutch of a manual transmission based on an input rotational velocity of a flywheel coupled to a torque generating system. The calculated slip is used to calculate an energy into the clutch. In one implementation, an accumulated energy into the clutch is calculated based on a rate of the calculated energy and a torque request for the torque generating system is limited based on the accumulated energy. In one implementation, an energy capacity remaining in the clutch until a threshold indicative of damage occurring is calculated based on the calculated energy and a limited torque request for the torque generating system is generated. The limited torque request corresponds to an amount of allowable torque before full clutch engagement occurs, where this time is calculable based on a rate at which the clutch slip is decreasing.

Slip and energy based clutch protection

Rev-matching techniques that do not require a gear position sensor or a clutch position sensor are provided for a manual transmission of a vehicle. The techniques include predicting an intent of a driver to shift gears of the manual transmission based on whether the vehicle is accelerating or decelerating; predicting a shift of the manual transmission from a current gear to a different target gear based on the predicted driver intent; and detecting a trigger condition indicative of the predicted shift of the manual transmission based on a position of a clutch pedal configured to control engagement/disengagement of a clutch of the manual transmission. In response to detecting the trigger condition, a torque request for the torque generating system is modified to obtain a modified torque request, and the torque generating system is controlled based on the modified torque request.
