A radiative recuperator preheats oxidant and/or fuel for combustion at one or more burners of a furnace. The recuperator includes a duct, at least portions of which comprise a material having a thermal conductivity of greater than 1 W/(m&#xb7;K), preferably greater than 3 W/(m&#xb7;K), that receives hot flue gas produced by the burner(s). The duct radiatively transfers heat to oxidant or fuel (for preheating) flowing through one or more metallic pipes disposed in between the duct and an insulating wall.

Entrained metal hydride particle are removed from a flow of hydrogen from a Mg-based hydride storage unit using not only a particle filter but improvements for reducing or eliminating drastic changes in flow. In addition to or alternative to removal of entrained metal hydride particles, methane produced by reaction of hydrogen with steel in a metal hydride system preferably operated above 350&#xb0; C. is removed downstream of the Mg-based hydride storage unit using an adsorption cartridge, preferably containing activated carbon.

A cylinder caddy, adapted to a bottle with a neck, a bottom, and a center of gravity is provided. The caddy has a strap configured to affix circumferentially to the cylinder at a location higher than the center of gravity, and at least one axial strap configured to connect the strap. The caddy includes a handle with a first end pivotally attached to the upper strap, and a second end configured to detachably connect to the neck. In a first position, the handle is pivoted to allow the second end to be attached to the neck, thereby requiring the removal of a regulator, protecting the neck from dust and other particulates and allowing a user to safely carry the cylinder. In a second position, the handle is pivoted to allow the second end form a strut, thereby providing the user a more stable operating position.

A method for calibration/bump testing of a gas monitoring device utilizing the portable metered flow apparatus is also provided.
