The present invention provides IFN-&#x3b1; conjugates including IFN-&#x3b1; peptides and modifying groups such as PEG moieties. The IFN-&#x3b1; peptide and modifying group are linked via an intact glycosyl linking group interposed between and covalently attached to the IFN-&#x3b1; peptide and the modifying group. The IFN-&#x3b1; conjugates are formed from glycosylated peptides by the action of a glycosyltransferase. The glycosyltransferase ligates a modified sugar onto an amino acid or a glycosyl residue on the IFN-&#x3b1; peptide. Also provided are methods for preparing the IFN-&#x3b1; conjugates, methods for treating various disease conditions with the IFN-&#x3b1; conjugates, and pharmaceutical formulations including the IFN-&#x3b1; conjugates.

Glycopegylated interferon &#x3b1;

Disclosed is a composition comprising a substantially purified Cytokine Inhibitory Factor (CIF) having certain characteristics, including the ability to inhibit RNA transcription of the pro-inflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-&#x3b1;), interleukin-1-beta (IL-1&#x3b2;), and interleukin-2 (IL-2). Also disclosed is a method for substantially purifying the Cytokine Inhibitory Factor and a method for modulating the immune system of an animal using such composition.

Disclosed is an isolated Cytokine Activating Factor (CAF) protein, an isolated nucleic acid molecule encoding a CAF protein, an antibody that selectively binds to a CAF protein, a composition comprising a Cytokine Activating Factor (CAF), and a method for modulating the immune system using the composition. Also disclosed is a method for treating cancer using such a composition.
