A modular drill includes a shank, a retaining pin, a cutting insert, and a locking pin. The shank includes a shank bore having an axial direction leading into the shank bore, and a locking pin opening. The retaining pin includes a retaining pin shaft axially movable positioned with the shank bore, the retaining pin shaft having a locking pin engagement surface. The retaining pin includes a retaining pin head having a retaining pin head engagement surface. The cutting insert includes a cutting insert passage for passing the retaining pin head therethrough; and a cutting insert cavity having a cutting insert engagement surface for engaging the retaining pin head engagement surface. The locking pin is for positioning within the locking pin opening and engaging with the locking pin engagement surface to force the retaining pin shaft to move further in the axial direction.

Modular drill, method of assembly thereof, and cutting insert

In one aspect, expansion sleeves for pressure-activated tool holder apparatus are described herein. An expansion sleeve, for example, comprises a first end, a second end and a longitudinal axis extending between the first end and the second end. A first set of fluid chambers are proximate the first end of the sleeve and a second set of fluid chambers are proximate the second end, wherein fluid channels extend along the longitudinal axis to connect radially offset fluid chambers of the first and second sets.

Expansion sleeves and associated chucks

A rotary cutting tool including a cutter member having an axial forward end and an axial rearward end. A cutting region is at the axial forward end of the cutter member, and a male threaded portion is adjacent the axial rearward end of the cutter member. A shank member has an axial forward end and a shank bore opening at the axial forward end. The shank bore has an axial shank bore length. The shank bore contains a female threaded portion and an axial rearward shank bore portion axially rearward of the female threaded portion. The axial rearward shank bore portion has a terminal end. When the male threaded portion of the cutter member fully engages the female threaded portion of the shank member, the axial rearward end of the cutter member being spaced a first distance axially forward of the terminal end of the axial rearward shank bore portion.

Coupling mechanism for cutting tool

A rotary cutting tool includes a cutter of generally cylindrical shape disposed about a central longitudinal axis. The cutter has a first end having an active fluted portion and an opposite second end, the second end having a male threaded portion disposed thereabout. The cutting tool further includes a shank of generally cylindrical shape disposed about the central longitudinal axis, the shank having a recessed female threaded portion formed in a first end. The male threaded portion includes a number of threads disposed at a first pitch and the female threaded portion includes a number of threads disposed at a second pitch different than the first pitch. The cutter and the shank are selectively coupled via threaded engagement of the male threaded portion and the female threaded portion.

A tool adapter includes an adaptor body having a connection portion structured to be attached to a machine tool and a holder portion disposed opposite the connection portion and a tool receiver structured to receive and couple a portion of a rotary cutting tool therein. The tool receiver is mounted in the holder portion so as to be rotatable to a limited extent. The tool receiver is mounted in the holder so as to be elastically resilient in both the axial and circumferential directions.

Tool adaptor having an integrated damping device

A tool shank for use with a cutting insert in a rotary cutting tool includes a body having, and adapted to be rotated about, a central longitudinal tool axis, the body having a tip portion structured to receive at least a portion of the cutting insert therein. The shank also includes a pair of chip flutes formed in the body and a pair of recesses, each recess bordering a respective chip flute. Each recess includes a rim portion extending perpendicular to the tool axis and a bearing surface extending at an incline relative to the tool axis. Each rim portion is adapted to engage a corresponding surface on the cutting insert. Each bearing surface is adapted to engage a corresponding bearing surface on the cutting insert in a manner such that the cutting insert is pulled against the body when the rotary cutting tool is rotated about the tool axis.

A rotary cutting tool that is composed of a tool shank with at least one chucking groove or chip flute and one exchangeable cutting insert. At the tip of the shank a recess for accommodating the cutting insert is provided. The tool shank, on its circumference, has a limb with a bearing surface that is inclined relative to the tool axis and that corresponds to a likewise inclined bearing surface on a wing of the cutting insert. The inclination of the bearing surfaces produces an axial force that retains the cutting insert on the tool shank.

A tool holder includes a shank including a tool holder portion and a central bore for accommodating a cutting tool, and a first shrink fit sleeve disposed about the tool holder portion of the shank. An application of heat to the tool holder causes the tool holder portion and the first shrink fit sleeve to expand outwardly, and the removal of heat will cause the tool holder portion and the first shrink fit sleeve to contract inwardly to rigidly maintain the cutting tool within the tool holder by shrink fit. The tool holder may also include a second shrink fit sleeve disposed about the first shrink fit sleeve to provide increased torque capability.

A milling cutter having a plurality of on-edge cutting inserts mounted within pockets about the peripheral wall of the cutter body includes angled pockets which not only permit a greater number of pockets to accept inserts but furthermore permits relatively easy access to insert and remove mounting screws for securing each insert within a pocket.
