Medication delivery devices, sensing systems, and methods are disclosed for determining the relative axial and rotational movements of its members to determine the amount of a dose set and/or delivered by the medication delivery device. A sensing system comprises a barrel sensor system, a drive sleeve sensor system, and/or an axial sensor system. The barrel sensor system is for detecting the absolute relative angular position of the barrel relative to the housing during dose setting. The drive sleeve sensor system is for detecting the absolute relative angular position of the drive sleeve relative to the housing during dose delivery. The axial sensor system is for detecting the relative axial positions of the dose dial relative to the housing during dose setting and delivery. A controller receives outputs from the sensor systems corresponding to the absolute relative positions to determine the actual amounts of dose set and delivered.

Dose sensing mechanism in a medication delivery device

A drug delivery device may include a cassette with a needle assembly and a cartridge. The cassette is configured to couple and decouple from a reusable module. The device may also comprise an orientation mechanism to orient the cassette in relation to another device, such as a reusable housing. The device may comprise an extendable and retractable needle assembly. The cassette configuration is adapted to have a stopper with a short travel (no more than 14 mm) to deliver 1 mL of medication. The cassette may have a ratio of height to diameter from 2:1 to 1:1. The cassette may include a pair of drivable interfaces for being driven to actuate the stopper to expel medication and to drive the needle assembly between a retracted and extended configuration for controlled fluid communication between the needle and reservoir.

Drug delivery device cassette

Medication delivery devices are provided having a dose delivery sensing capability. A sensed element is attached to a dose setting member of the device. The sensed element includes surface features radially-spaced from one another. A rotational sensor is attached to an actuator of the device. The rotational sensor includes a movable element that is contactable against the surface features. The rotational sensor is configured to generate a signal in response to the movement of the movable element over the surface features during their rotation. A controller is operatively coupled to the rotational sensor, and in response to receiving the generated signal, the controller is configured to determine a number of the surface features passing the movable element of the rotational sensor during dose delivery. The number can be associated with an amount of dose delivered. Sensing can be provided in a module or integrated in device.

Medication delivery device with sensing system

The present disclosure relates to a method of administering a medication with a dose detection system in combination with a medication delivery device. In one aspect, the system includes a module body adapted to be removably attached to the actuator of a medication delivery device, and a plurality of magnetic sensing elements attached to said module body. The magnetic sensing elements can be spaced apart from one another to define a ring pattern. The system detects the amount of rotation of a magnetic ring of said one or more dipoles of a medication delivery device relative to the magnetic sensing elements during dose delivery when the module is attached to the device.

Dose detection for a medication delivery device

A medication delivery device usable with a medication container wherein advancement of a piston within the container expels medication. The device includes a housing and a drive assembly. The drive assembly includes a drive ribbon having distal and proximal edge sections. The drive ribbon has a retracted configuration defining a spiral and an extended configuration defining a helix. The drive ribbon is movable from the retracted configuration to the extended configuration with the movement defining a drive axis and advancing the piston. In some embodiments, the drive ribbon may not rotate as the drive ribbon is advanced while in other embodiments, the ribbon does rotate. Disclosed drive assemblies include manually driven assemblies, spring driven assemblies and motor driven assemblies. The container may be replaceable to allow for reuse of the device. In some embodiments, replaceable cartridges which include both the medication container and the drive ribbon are employed.

The present disclosure relates to a dose detection system for use in combination with a medication delivery device. In one aspect, the system includes a module keyed to the device and including a sensor operable to detect the relative angular position of a sensed element attached to the medication delivery device. The system determines the type of medication contained by the device, and/or the type of device, based on the detected angular position of the sensed element. In another aspect, the dose detection system is used in combination with a medication delivery device including a dose setting member which rotates relative to an actuator during dose delivery. The dose detection system includes a sensor and is operable to detect the relative angular positions of a sensed element attached to the dose setting member during dose delivery and to determine the amount of dose delivered. Related methods are also disclosed.

Dose detection and drug identification for a medication delivery device

Medication delivery devices, sensing systems, and methods are disclosed for determining the relative axial and rotational movements of its members to determine the amount of a dose set and/or delivered by the medication delivery device. A sensing system comprises a barrel sensor system (), a drive sleeve sensor system (), and/or an axial sensor system (). The barrel sensor system () is for detecting the absolute relative angular position of the barrel relative to the housing during dose setting. The present disclosure relates to a dose detection system for use with a medication delivery device in which a dose setting member rotates relative to an actuator during dose delivery. The dose detection system comprises a module including a rotation sensor attached to the actuator during dose delivery. A sensed element is attached to the dose setting member and includes first gear teeth. The rotation sensor comprises a driven gear including second gear teeth. The second gear teeth are operatively received by the first gear teeth and are driven in rotation as the first gear teeth rotate during dose delivery. The rotation sensor is responsive to the rotation of the second gear teeth to detect the rotation of the dose setting member.

Dose detection module for a medication delivery device

The present disclosure relates to a dose detection system in combination with a medication delivery device. In one aspect, the system includes a module body adapted to be removably attached to the actuator of a medication delivery device, and one or more magnetic sensing elements attached to said module body. The system detects the amount of rotation of a magnetic ring of said one or more dipoles of a medication delivery device relative to the magnetic sensing elements during dose delivery when the module is attached to the device.

Sensing systems, devices and methods are disclosed for determining the relative movement of first and second members of a medication delivery device which are proportional to the amount of a dose set and/or delivered by operation of the medication delivery device. A sensor is coupled with the first member. A pair of targets is coupled with the second member. Each target comprises an array of teeth which move through an area sensed by the sensor. The sensor thereby detects characteristic values of a sensed parameter corresponding to the combined relative positions of the first and second members. The sensing system outputs this information to a processor which determines the amount of the dose set and/or delivered. Related medication delivery devices and methods are also disclosed.

The present disclosure relates to a dose detection system for use in combination with a medication delivery device. In one aspect, the system includes a module body adapted to be removably attached to the actuator of a medication delivery device, and a plurality of magnetic sensing elements attached to said module body. A reusable medication delivery device that can determine medication remaining in a simple fashion. The device includes a first sensor () for sensing when a cartridge is mounted in the device, and at least one second sensor for sensing a retraction of a drive member () that engages a cartridge plunger (). The device includes a controller that determines, based on inputs from the first sensor and the at least one second sensor, that a newly installed cartridge is to be considered full or not full of medication. The controller calculates, after a medication delivery and based on an input from a means for determining an amount of medication delivered by operation of a dose delivery mechanism, and if the cartridge was considered full when newly installed, a quantity of medication remaining in the installed cartridge after the medication delivery.
