Polymer-filler coupling compounds with the formula B-A-S&#x2014;N are claimed. In these compounds, B is an azaheterocyclic oxygen or sulfur containing moiety, or an allyltin moiety; Sis a polysulfide, where x is between 2 and about 10; A is a linking atom or group that forms a bridge between B and S; and N is a blocking group. Scan be a disulfide. N can be a conventional blocking group or other group such as -A-B. Methods for using the polymer-filler coupling compounds to modify polymers containing unsaturated carbon-carbon bonds and promote filler dispersion are also claimed. Additionally, vulcanizable rubber compositions containing the polymer-filler coupling compounds and methods for making vulcanized rubber compositions using the polymer-filler coupling compounds are also claimed.

Polymer-filler coupling additives

A patch and method for mounting an electronic monitoring device to the innerliner of a pneumatic tire is provided wherein the monitoring device is potted directly to an attachment patch. A frame is built on an attachment patch and the electronic monitoring device is disposed inside the frame. An encapsulation material is poured into the frame and cured to encapsulate the monitoring device directly against the patch. The patch may then be connected to the innerliner of a pneumatic tire.

The invention provides a monitoring device and tire combination wherein an antenna is mounted to the tire in a location spaced from the monitoring device. In one embodiment, the antenna may be mounted to the tire sidewall outside the body cords of the tire. The antenna may be mounted on the outer surface of the sidewall or embedded within the body of the sidewall. The antenna is connected to the monitoring device with a connector. The connector may be electrically coupled to the monitoring device or may be connected to the monitoring device with a plug and socket connection. When the antenna is outside the body cord, the connector may extend from the antenna through the bead filler, over the top of the turn up, or under the bead ring.

Method of forming an assembly of a patch and electronic monitoring device

A monitoring device and patch assembly and method for forming the assembly is disclosed wherein the patch includes a platform and at least a portion of the monitoring device is positioned adjacent the patch. At least a portion of the monitoring device and platform are encapsulated to connect the monitoring device to the patch.

Dispersion of filler(s) in polymeric compositions are improved by the use of a polymer-filler coupling compound, Q&#x2014;A&#x2014;B, wherein Q comprises a dipolar nitrogen-containing moiety that can form a 1,3 dipolar addition to an unsaturated carbon-carbon bond; B is an oxazoline, thiazoline, alkoxysilane or allyltin moiety, and A is a linking atom or group that forms a bridge between Q and B.

A monitoring device and patch assembly includes a patch that removably and re-attachably holds the monitoring device. The patch is adapted to connect the monitoring device to a pneumatic tire when the monitoring device is held by the patch. The patch is configured to hold a monitoring device having a rounded outer surface. The patch holds the rounded monitoring device by having a resilient tube with an outlet having a diameter smaller than the diameter of the monitoring device. The monitoring device of the invention includes a feature that allows it to be removed from the patch.

A method for encapsulating a monitoring device for a pneumatic tire, wherein the monitoring device includes a threaded rod and a pressure sensor, includes the steps of positioning the monitoring device in an encapsulation chamber of an encapsulation device with a portion of the threaded rod extending from the encapsulation chamber; engaging the threaded rod against the encapsulation device to suspend the electronic monitoring device within the encapsulation chamber; and filling the encapsulation chamber with encapsulation material to encapsulate the monitoring device to form an encapsulated monitoring device. The encapsulated monitoring device may be mounted to a pneumatic tire with an attachment patch.
