A brace for a part of a body includes a first conductive fiber associated with a first polarity, and a second conductive fiber associated with a second polarity different from the first polarity. The second fiber is woven together with the first fiber and insulated from the first fiber. The brace also includes a selectively electrically activated cross-linking agent between the first and second fibers. The agent is constructed to cross-link in a first active mode when the first and second fibers are electrified and is constructed to not cross-link in a second inactive mode when the first and second fibers are not electrified. The brace surrounds a body part, such as a knee or neck. The agent can include an ER fluid and/or EAP. A brace system includes a selectively electrically activated brace for the part of the body.

The introduction of spray formed metals into critical applications in the aircraft engine and power generation industries has been hampered by the possibility of erosion of oxide particles from a crucible lining or pouring nozzle in conventional spray forming equipment. These oxide particles may become inclusions that limit low-cycle fatigue life of parts. Use of a cold-walled induction guide (CIG) with an electrical insulation layer between copper CIG elements and the liquid metal offers a means of delivering ceramic-free alloys to a spray system with improved efficiency. CIG design options facilitated by a new oven-brazed fabrication technique resolve induction coil environmental isolation issues, correct thermal strain tolerance problems, facilitate dual frequency induction designs, allow improved electrical coupling efficiency and thermal efficiency, result in improved melt flow initiation, and facilitate disassembly without damage from the solidified melt.

Cold walled induction guide tube

A method for controlling electromagnetic flux concentration in a discharge guide tube for a metal refining apparatus is provided. The discharge guide tube comprises a base plate, an extension, a central orifice that extends through the extension from a source of liquid metal to an outlet in the discharge guide tube for directing a stream of metal therethrough, and an interior discharge guide tube flux concentration configuration; an induction heater system that generates an electromagnetic field in the discharge guide tube, the induction heater system being disposed on the extension with a gap defined therebetween, the induction heater system and the discharge guide tube being capable of relative vertical movement and subsequent positions with respect to each other with the gap being essentially constant. The method for providing electromagnetic flux concentration comprises providing current to the induction heater system; generating an electromagnetic field resulting from the step of providing current; and directing an electromagnetic flux to the central orifice at locations defined by the interior discharge guide tube. The step of generating an electromagnetic flux also generates heat and the step of generating heat provides a control of the flow of the stream of metal in its liquidus condition. The electromagnetic field is applied at a substantially constant level regardless of the relative vertical movement and subsequent positions between the induction heater system and the discharge guide tube.

Method for controlling flux concentration in guide tubes

The flowrate of a stream discharged from a drain in a vessel is measured by imaging the stream, measuring a diameter of the stream image, and calculating the flowrate based on the measured diameter. A video camera may be aimed below the drain for imaging the stream. A computer is joined to the camera for measuring the diameter of the stream and calculating a corresponding flowrate therefor. Either the pressure head above the drain or the profile of the stream below the drain may be used in calculating the discharge stream flowrate

A consumable electrode is suspended by a stub. The stub includes upper and lower hangers between which is vertically mounted a loadcell for weighing the electrode attached to the lower hanger. An electrical conductor is joined between the upper and lower hangers for carrying electrical current therebetween to power the electrode without damaging the loadcell.

A guide tube structure for flux concentration is provided. The discharge guide tube comprises a central orifice that extends from a source of metal to an outlet in the discharge guide tube for directing a stream of melt therethrough; a structure that generates an electromagnetic field in the discharge guide tube; and an interior discharge guide tube flux concentration configuration that is capable of concentrating at least one of heat, electromagnetic field, and electromagnetic flux onto the stream of melt that flows through the central orifice. The electromagnetic field is applied at a substantially constant level.

An apparatus for sorting fragments of titanium-based sponge on the basis of color is disclosed. The apparatus captures at least one color image of each fragment, inserts relevant color values from the image into an automated color-sorting system to determine the color of the fragment, and segregates the fragments according to color or range-of-color, by way of a physical segregation apparatus controlled by the color sorting system. The color sorting systems usually involve the conversion of color images from the fragments into color signals, which are in turn transformed into color values. The color images are usually represented by a pattern of pixels. The color values are automatically compared to values, which are part of a look-up table based on data sets, which embrace acceptable or rejectable color values. Comparison of color values determined for the fragments with those in the look-up table results in the acceptance or rejection of each fragment.

A method for sorting fragments of titanium-based sponge on the basis of color is disclosed. The method involves the steps of capturing at least one color image of each fragment, inserting relevant color values from the image into an automated color-sorting system to determine the color of the fragment, and segregating the fragments according to color or range-of-color, by way of a physical segregation apparatus controlled by the color sorting system. A melt guide is provided for enclosing a bottom of an electroslag refining crucible containing a melt of electroslag refined metal. A base plate is sized to have a perimeter to engage the crucible bottom for attachment thereto. The base plate includes an upper surface for defining with the crucible a reservoir for receiving the melt, and a lower surface spaced therebelow. A central drain extends through the base plate for draining by gravity the melt from the reservoir. A plurality of circumferentially spaced apart slots extend radially outwardly from the drain toward the base plate perimeter and extend vertically through the base plate. Induction heating coils are mounted below the base plate lower surface for heating the melt through the slots. The base plate may take various forms including a flat plate, with or without a cooperating and removable insert.

Close-coupled atomization methods employing non-axisymmetric fluid flow geometries have demonstrated superior efficiency in the production of fine superalloy powder, such as, for example, nickel base superalloys compared to conventional close-coupled atomization utilizing an axisymmetric gas orifice and an axisymmetric melt nozzle. It is believed that the principal physical mechanisms leading to non-axisymmetric atomization system fine powder yield improvement are atomization plume spreading, the at least lessening of the melt pinch down at the interaction point between the atomization liquid and the liquid melt and improved melt film formation at the melt guide tube tip. The greatest fine powder yield improvement occurred when the non-axisymmetric atomization systems are operated with atomization parameters that result in the formation of multiple atomization plumes. Recognition of the atomization plume characteristics ranging from pinch-down to spreading to multiple sub-plume formation provides a basis for atomization process control to provide the greatest fine powder yield improvement verses conventional close-coupled axisymmetric atomization systems.

Close-coupled atomization systems and methods employing axisymmetric fluid flow and non-axisymmetric melt guide tube exit orifice configuration have demonstrated superior efficiency in the production of fine superalloy powder, such as, for example, nickel base superalloys compared to conventional close-coupled atomization utilizing an axisymmetric annular gas orifice and an axisymmetric guide melt guide tube exit orifice configuration.

Close-coupled atomization utilizing non-axisymmetric melt flow

An apparatus and method for atomizing liquid metal are disclosed. A liquid metal supply is coupled to a nozzle for atomizing a stream of liquid metal in an atomizing zone extending from the nozzle. A viewing instrument provides a field of view extending to the atomization zone. A sensor coupled with the viewing instrument generates an image of the atomizing zone, and a control adjusts a flow rate of the stream responsive to the image.

Apparatus and method for atomizing liquid metal with viewing instrument

An apparatus, system and method for viewing an industrial process in an obscuring environment, such as molten metal atomization, is disclosed. An enclosure defining a chamber for containing a particulate form from atomized liquid metal has a nozzle for atomizing liquid metal mounted thereon in communication with the chamber whereby particles recirculate throughout the chamber. The nozzle being comprised of a cylindrical plenum means and a melt guide tube extending axially therethrough to an exit orifice. The plenum means is configured to provide a jet of atomizing gas converging in an atomizing zone extending from the exit orifice. A viewing means extends through the enclosure to a viewing orifice adjacent the atomization zone, the viewing means being configured to extend a field of view through the chamber to the atomization zone. A purging gas flow is provided in the viewing means to minimize atomized particles from contacting the window, and an image of the atomization zone is generated by viewing through the window.
