A metal cutting drill bit has a shank portion, a flute portion defining a helix angle and a tip. The tip has a primary cutting edge extending to an outer periphery of the drill bit. The primary cutting edge has a rake face defining a rake angle. The rake angle is different from the helix angle at the tip of the drill bit.

A cutting tool (500) has a longitudinally extending shaft portion (588) with a chucking part (509) and a cutting head (506). A pressed powder cutting insert (518) with a cutting edge (520) is on the cutting head (506). The cutting edge (520) includes at least one cutting portion. A rake surface (524) is formed adjacent to at least one of the cutting portions (520) with the rake face (524) being at a rake angle from about 0.degree. to 10.degree.. A clearance face (526) is formed adjacent to the at least one cutting portion opposite the rake face (524). The clearance face (526) is at a clearance angle from about 10.degree. to 50.degree.. An edge radius (540) between the rake face (524) and the clearance face (526) is at a radius of from about 0.0015 to about 0.004 inch. The edge radius 540 is formed during pressing of the powder to form the insert, thus, enabling the insert to be directly braised into the cutting head (506).

A tool element subassembly, such as an abrasive disc subassembly, for mounting to the spindle of a grinder. The subassembly includes an abrasive disc, a collar nut and, optionally, a backing flange. The central bore in the abrasive disc as well as the hub portion of the collar nut which fits into the bore are both hexagonally shaped to provide a positive drive connection therebetween. The collar nut is either press fit onto the disc or, alternatively, placed directly into the mold for the disc so that the formed abrasive disc is molded directly to the hub portion of the collar nut. In certain embodiments the collar nut includes an integrally formed, enlarged head portion that is adapted to engage the bottom surface of the abrasive disc and is configured to receive a wrench for tightening the subassembly onto, or loosening the subassembly for removal from, the spindle. In other alternative embodiments the collar nut includes an integral enlarged circular flange that is adapted to engage the top surface of the abrasive disc and an annular lip portion that initially protrudes from the bottom of the collar nut and is adapted to be deformed so as to engage the bottom surface of the abrasive disc and tightly secure the abrasive disc between the enlarged flange portion and deformed lip portion of the collar nut. The collar nut in these embodiments also includes an upper portion above the flange that is configured for receiving a wrench. Additional alternative embodiments are disclosed.

Tool element subassembly

Tool element subassembly and method of manufacturing same

A tool element subassembly, such as an abrasive disc subassembly, for mounting to the spindle of a grinder. The subassembly includes an abrasive disc, a collar nut and, optionally, a backing flange. The central bore in the abrasive disc as well as the hub portion of the collar nut which fits into the bore are both hexagonally shaped to provide a positive drive connection therebetween. The collar nut is either press fit onto the disc or, alternatively, placed directly into the mold for the disc so that the formed abrasive disc is molded directly to the hub portion of the collar nut. Additional alternative embodiments are also disclosed.

A coupling flange for use on a power tool such as a portable grinder for transferring torque loads from the motor-driven spindle of the tool to a tool element subassembly such as an abrasive disc subassembly. The coupling flange is designed to accommodate and be usable with both hubbed and non-hubbed abrasive disc subassemblies. The coupling flange is adapted to be installed onto the spindle of the tool and comprises a first contact surface for frictionally engaging the spindle, and at least two radially spaced annular drive surfaces. The first drive surface is adapted to frictionally engage the backing flange of a hubbed-type of abrasive disc subassembly and the second drive surface is adapted to frictionally engage the backside of the abrasive disc of a non-hubbed type of abrasive disc subassembly.

Universal backing flange

A boring tool of the self-feeding type is disclosed which includes a plurality of cutting members secured to a body and a self-feeding member operative to draw the boring tool into the workpiece. The cutting elements are positioned on the body in such a manner as to provide a depth of cut correlated to the rate of advancement effected by the feed member thereby insuring smooth even efficient cutting action of the boring tool. Additionally, the body is provided with a work engaging surface portion operative to further insure controlled even advancement of the boring tool through the workpiece. A retaining member is also provided in the body member which is operative to retain a one piece feed membershank within the body and to maintain the self-feeding member in close proximity to an adjacent cutting member so as to prevent wrapping of wood fibers or the like about the self-feeding member.
