A personal video recorder is provided for displaying a targeted advertisement on a display in conjunction with displaying of a broadcast stream on the display. A viewer profile of a viewer of the display is defined based on signals received by a controller indicating usage of a viewer control interface by the viewer, for example based on viewer reactions to a broadcast stream or to an advertisement. A targeted advertisement is selected from stored advertisements based on the viewer profile of the viewer of the display. The targeted advertisement is displayed on the display. The viewer profile is updated based on subsequent signals received by the controller indicating usage of the viewer control interface. The signals indicate viewer reactions, for example, a viewer reaction to a broadcast stream or a viewer reaction to an advertisement or a viewer purchase.

The present invention may be regarded as personal video recorder and a method of displaying a targeted advertisement on a display in conjunction with displaying of a broadcast stream on the display. A video system has an input port to receive video data that includes a plurality of premium contents and has an output port to couple to a video display for displaying video data selected by a viewer. A preference engine is coupled to the input port and is configured to track viewer selections of the video data and to create a viewer profile representing viewing preferences of the viewer. A promotion module, which is coupled to the preference engine and the output port, is responsive to the viewer profile to select at least one preferred promotion content from the plurality of premium contents, to cause the selected preferred promotion content to be stored and to cause the selected preferred promotion content to be displayed to entice the viewer to watch a premium content associated with the selected preferred promotion content.

An audiovisual system and a method make audiovisual programs available to a user and present on a display device a first available audiovisual program selected from the available audiovisual programs. The audiovisual system includes a disk drive and a preference determination module. The preference determination module estimates a degree of interest for each available audiovisual program. The audiovisual system further includes an alert module that generates an interrupt signal in response to the degrees of interest of the available audiovisual programs. The audiovisual system further includes a system controller responsive to user input and electronic program guide information to present the first available audiovisual program to the user. The system controller is further responsive to the interrupt signal from the alert module to interrupt presenting the first available audiovisual program to provide information to the user regarding at least a second available audiovisual program.

The present invention may be regarded as a method of permitting a viewer to view alternative subject matter data (e.g., an advertisement) on a display while receiving streaming video data without loss of the streaming video data. The method receives streaming video data and displays the streaming video data as a program of a first content. Upon selection by a viewer of the alternative subject matter data, the method stores the streaming video data on a personal video recorder. When the viewer selects returning to viewing of the streaming video data on the display, the method displays the streaming video data stored on the personal video recorder on the display while continuing to store incoming streaming video data on the personal video recorder. This method allows a viewer with &ldquo;one click&rdquo; to select and view the alternative subject matter data and with &ldquo;one click&rdquo; to return to the first content where it was left.

A control device for a system for displaying video data includes an output port configured to couple to the video display and input ports configured to couple to a plurality of sources for display content. An image generator is coupled to the input ports and the output port and generates a portal image to be displayed on the video display as a personalized portal screen. The personalized portal screen has a plurality of integrated display options personalized to a viewer's preferences. Each display option corresponds to one of the sources for display content or content within one of the sources. The display options include viewports that display content from selected sources and further including links to other sources.

A video system has an input port to receive video data that includes a plurality of premium contents, and an output port to couple to a video display for displaying video data selected by a viewer. A preference engine coupled to the input port tracks viewer selections of the video data and creates a viewer profile representing viewing preferences of the viewer. An image generator is coupled to the input port, the output port and the storage device, wherein the image generator is responsive to the viewer profile and responsive to data representing available video data, including data representing the premium contents. The image generator generates a menu image to be displayed on the video display as a menu including a limited number of viewing preferences having a high probability of acceptance by the viewer. The image generator applies a weighting factor to the data representing the premium contents to ensure that at least one of the premium contents is included in the menu.
