A self-cleaning intake screen assembly for preventing debris, fish, and other wildlife from being transferred from a waterway such as a lake or river, which includes a conical support structure, a screen and a screen sweeping assembly. The conical support structure has a circular base, a cap plate, and a plurality of support studs extending therebetween. The screen extends between the base and the cap plate and is affixed to the support studs. The screen sweeping assembly is rotatably mounted to the cap plate for sweeping debris off of the screen. A flow restrictor is disposed inside the conical support structure for restricting water flow through a portion of the screen in order to reduce differences in water flow rates through different portions of the screen.

Self-cleaning intake screen

A conical intake screen which is self-cleaned by using four elongate brushes which are slowly driven over its surface by a submersible, programmable electric motor. The invention is preferably placed in the waterway with the axis of the conical screen oriented in the vertical direction. As the rearwardly angled brushes move over the screen, the brush angle and gravity tend to force the debris downward until it falls from the edge of the device. Further, a cleaning brush is placed within the surface of the conical screen with its bristles extending slightly above the surface of the screen. In this manner each screen sweeper engages the brush cleaner once each rotation, which action tends to dislodge debris from the bristles of the sweeper brushes. The programmable motor will typically make three counterclockwise revolutions, one clockwise revolution, and then stop for a selectable interval of from 15 minutes to 3 hours, although continuous action is also an option. The device may be solar powered so it can operate for extended periods in remote areas unattended.

A fish-excluding, self cleaning screen forming at least part of the boundary between a body of water such as a stream, and a bay from which water is to be withdrawn. On the bay side of the screen is a hub with a plurality of rotating wands that discharge water against the bay side of the screen to flush screen apertures and provide a periodic variation in flow through the screen to discourage passage of fish. Optional brushes may periodically brush the bay side of the screen to assist in cleaning the apertures.
