Apparatus for moving a reciprocating object, such as a spring biased poppet valve, between a rest and a second position. The apparatus includes two solenoids, each of which has a core, with one of the solenoids having a larger core and imparting greater force than the other. The solenoids are mounted in line with one another so that the core of one solenoid is adapted to contract the core of the other, with the latter being adapted to contact the object. A first solenoid provides a driving force to the object to move it in opposition to a biasing force and the second solenoid holds the object in its moved position when the first solenoid is de-energized. When the core of the first solenoid is in its rest position, it is out of contact with the core of the second solenoid and this enables the biasing force of the object to rapidly move to its rest position upon de-energization of the second solenoid.

A lost foam pattern assembly comprising a crankcase section including first and second mounting surfaces, a right cylinder section which is fixed to the first mounting surface and which includes a primary locator, a left cylinder section which is fixed to the second mounting surface and which includes a primary locator, a transfer passage having an upper end located in the right cylinder section, and a transfer passage having an upper end located in the left cylinder section.

A foam pattern assembly for use in forming an engine block in a lost foam casting process, the pattern assembly comprising a base portion including a generally planar front mounting surface having therein a plurality of crankcase-defining cavities and a plurality of intake ports, and a rear mounting surface spaced from the front mounting surface, the base portion partially defining a plurality of transfer passages and a plurality of air intake passages each communicating between a respective one of the intake ports and a respective one of the transfer passages, and a cylinder portion including a generally planar front mounting surface mating with the rear mounting surface on the base portion, the cylinder portion partially defining the air intake passage and partially defining a plurality of cylinder bores each communcating with a respective one of the transfer passages.

Disclosed herein is a rotary internal combustion engine comprising a generally trochoid shaped housing including a pair of spaced generally parallel side walls, a generally triangularly shaped rotor supported within the housing for rotation about an axis perpendicular to the side walls, which rotor includes three generally identically shaped side flanks which define, in cooperation with the housing, respective chambers which rotate with the flanks and which vary in volume in accordance with such rotation. The side flanks each include an end which leads in relation to the direction of rotor rotation, an end which trails in relation to the direction of rotor rotation, and a length extending between the leading and trailing ends. In addition, one of the side walls includes a charge inlet port which selectively communicates with the chambers in response to rotor rotation, which extends arcuately relative to the rotor axis, and which includes a portion which terminally communicates with the chambers and which is located such that the portion is closed off from communication with the chambers by respective parts of the flanks, which parts are spaced from the trailing ends in the direction toward the leading ends at a distance of from about 35 to 70 percent of the flank length.

Side port - RC engine

A circuit interconnecting a source of electrical energy with a power operated machine. The circuit comprises an interlock device including a motion switch which is adapted to be removably attached to the machine operator's body. The motion switch is movable between a normally deactivated position to prevent the flow of electrical energy from the source to the machine and an activated position to permit the flow of electrical energy from the source to the machine for operating the machine. The motion switch is operable to be moved to the activated position in response to movement of the operator's body.

Disclosed herein is a control for a direct current motor including a field weakening solenoid switch including a solenoid coil, which control includes a switch connected in series with a coil for connecting and disconnecting the coil to a source of direct current, and a device responsive to motor speed for operating the switch. Also disclosed herein is an overspeed control for a direct current motor including a solenoid switch which controls energization of the direct current motor, which is biased open, and which includes a solenoid coil operable in response to energization thereof to close the switch, which overspeed control comprises a switch connected in series with the coil for selectively connecting the coil to a source of direct current, and a device responsive to motor speed for operating the switch.

Speed sensitive field weakening control for traction motors

Disclosed herein is a carburetor for internal combustion engines having an automatic choke control mechanism including a vacuum diaphragm assembly operatively connected to a choke lever for opening a spring-biased closed choke valve and holding it open at idling and lower engine speeds and a linkage arrangement interconnecting a throttle valve lever and the choke lever for holding the choke valve open at higher engine speeds independently of the vacuum diaphragm assembly. The linkage arrangement includes a spring-biased choke pull-out lever which is held in a locked position during engine idling and lower engine speeds by a link having one end slidably received in a slot in the choke pull-out lever and the other end connected to the throttle lever. As the throttle lever is moved past a predetermined advance speed position, the link is moved to a released position in the choke pull-out lever slot wherein the choke pull-out lever is urged into abutting engagement with the choke lever to hold the choke valve open. As the throttle lever is returned toward the engine idling position past the predetermined advance speed setting, the link returns the choke pull-out lever to the locked position and the choke lever is again controlled by the vacuum diaphragm assembly.

Disclosed herein is a rotary internal combustion engine comprising housing means defining, in series, first, second, third and fourth trochoid shaped rotor cavities in aligned relation to each other, a rotatably mounted crankshaft including, in series, first, second, third and fourth eccentric portions respectively extending through the first, second, third and fourth cavities, and with the first and fourth crankshaft eccentric portions aligned with respect to each other and with the second and third crankshaft eccentric portions aligned with respect to each other at an angular spacing of 180.degree. from the first and fourth crankshaft eccentric portions, together with first, second, third and fourth rotors respectively rotatably mounted on the first, second, third and fourth crankshaft portions and respectively rotatable in the first, second, third and fourth cavities so as to respectively provide first, second, third and fourth rotating chambers in which combustion takes place, gear means on the housing means and on the rotors for effecting relative rotation between the rotors and the crankshaft and between the crankshaft and the housing means in response to combustion in the chambers, and ignition means for simultaneously initiating combustion in the first and fourth chambers and for simultaneously initiating combustion in the second and third chambers after 180.degree. of crankshaft rotation subsequent to initiation of combustion in the first and fourth chambers. Also disclosed herein is a rotary internal combustion engine comprising a lower housing assembly including housing means defining first and second trochoid shaped rotor cavities, a lower crankshaft portion rotatably and axially supported by the lower housing assembly, an upper housing assembly located above the lower housing assembly and including housing means defining third and fourth trochoid shaped rotor cavities, and an upper crankshaft portion solely supported for rotation in axial alignment with the lower crankshaft portion by the upper housing assembly, coupling means for connecting the upper and lower crankshaft portions so as to transmit axial and rotary loading from the upper crankshaft portion to the lower crankshaft portion, and means securing together the first and second housing assemblies with the coupling means connecting the upper and lower crankshaft portions. Also disclosed herein is a crankshaft for a multi-rotor rotary internal combustion engine and including, in series, first, second, third and fourth cylindrically shaped eccentric portions with the first and fourth eccentric portions being in alignment with each other and with the second and third eccentric portions being in alignment with each other and offset from the first and fourth eccentric portions by 180.degree..
