An electronically controlled sewing machine is provided with an arrangement for displaying a pictorial representation of a pattern to be sewn by the sewing machine. When the sewing machine user operates controls to alter the size and/or shape of the pattern, the display is correspondingly altered.

Pattern display arrangement for an electronically controlled sewing

An input switch arrangement which minimizes the number of connections needed between an array of switch members and the circuit used to detect and encode switch closure. Each switch member has four sides adapted to be connected together. The first and second sides of all switch members within a column of the array are connected to a unique pair of a plurality of column connection terminals and the third and fourth sides of all switch members within a row of the array are connected to unique pair of a plurality of row connection terminals.

A method for insuring that a traveling buttonhole presser foot, which is normally spring biased to an initial start position prior to movement of the traveling part thereof during the formation of a buttonhole, is located in the initial start position. As an initial step prior to the formation of the buttonhole, the sewing machine is operated for at least one stitch with the reversible feed regulating system thereof arranged to feed the work material in a direction to relax the biasing spring.
