Process and device for processing plate-like workpieces

Disclosed is a method of preventing potassium bicarbonate from caking. Anhydrous potassium carbonate is dispersed throughout the potassium bicarbonate immediately after it is manufactured. Preferably, about 0.1 to about 2.5 wt % of the anhydrous potassium carbonate is used. Also disclosed is a composition made by that method.

Disclosed is a method of making hypophosphorous acid from sodium hypophosphite by performing electrodialytic water splitting upon an aqueous solution of sodium hypophosphite. The process can be tied into an existing process for producing sodium hypophosphite wherein the product of the sodium hypophosphite process is used as a starting material in the hypophosphorous acid process and the depleted sodium hypophosphite solution from the hypophosphorous acid process, which contains some hypophosphorous acid, is used to adjust the pH in the sodium hypophosphite process.

Disclosed is a paint composition of about 50 to about 95 wt % of a pigment, about 5 to about 50 wt % of a binder and sufficient solvent to give a solids content of about 30 to about 100 wt %. The pigment has two components--about 0 to about 90 wt % zinc and about 10 to about 100 wt % of a particular type of ferrophosphorus. The ferrophosphorus of this invention contains about 45 to about 63 wt % iron, about 20 to about 35 wt % phosphorus, about 2 to about 10 wt % vanadium, and about 1 to about 10 wt % chromium.

Disclosed is a method of removing soluble vanadium from an aqueous stream containing sodium chromate or sodium bichromate. The liquor is passed over a water-insoluble trivalent chromium compound, and the vanadium in the liquor is extracted from the liquor onto the trivalent chromium compound. The process is especially useful in removing vanadium from a recycled concentrated sodium bichromate liquor to prevent the buildup of vanadium therein.

Disclosed is a method of making hydrated chromic oxide of low sodium content by forming an aqueous solution of sodium bichromate, reducing the sodium bichromate to chromic oxide using sucrose or formaldehyde, which results in the precipitation of chromic oxide, filtering the hydrated chromic oxide, acid repulping and filtering or calcining the hydrated chromic oxide, followed by water repulp and filtering with displacement washing. The color of the particle can be controlled by the drying temperature. A composite particle of hydrated chromic oxide/carbon can be made by forming a slurry of the aqueous solution of sodium bichromate with powdered carbon. The composite particle can be heated to directly produce chrome metal.

Disclosed is a method of making particle which comprise hydrous trivalent chromium oxide having the empirical formula CrO.sub.2 H intimately associated with a pulverulent carbonaceous substrate. A composition is formed which comprises an aqueous solution of water-soluble hexavalent chromium compound and a reducing agent in an amount sufficient to reduce the hexavalent chromium compound to the hydrous trivalent chromium oxide and to reduce the hydrous trivalent chromium oxide to metallic chromium. The reducing agent comprises a water-insoluble pulverulent carbonaceous substrate. Chrome metal can be made by heating the particles at a temperature of about 1100.degree. to about 1400.degree. C.

Disclosed is a method of making chromic acid by electrolyzing an aqueous solution of sodium bichromate until the sodium bichromate is converted to chromic acid at a bichromate percent conversion of about 1 to about 48.4. Sulfuric Acid is then added to the aqueous solution in an amount between stoichiometric and about 30 wt % in excess of stoichiometric to convert the remaining sodium bichromate to chromic acid. This results in the precipitation of chromic acid, which is separated from the aqueous solution.

Plastic molded articles having low friction and excellent wear resistance are produced by treating the surface of the plastic article with an aqueous solution of an inorganic fluoride such as hydrogen fluoride. Plastic articles which can be made in accordance with the invention include plastic brake pistons, bearings, motors and drives, commutators, slip ring alternators for DC drive motors, thrust washers, spacers and reactors, clutch plates, electrical switching equipment with sliding parts, gears, pulleys for belt drives, such as cog belt pulleys, V-belt pulleys and poly V-belt pulleys, gas meter discs, and the like. In addition to the treatment step, the plastic articles are neutralized, washed and dried.

Low friction, wear resistant plastic parts

Disclosed is a method of reducing the turbidity of an aqueous solution of chromic acid which is formed by dissolving melted chromic anhydride in water. The chromic anhydride is contacted with water in an amount in excess of 0.02 wt %, but insufficient to form a solution, at a temperature above ambient but below about 196.degree. C. The water may be in the form of a liquid, water vapor, or steam. When the chromic anhydride is subsequently dissolved in water, the solution is much less turbid than it otherwise would be.
