A piezoelectric actuator comprises a co-fired stack of piezoelectric elements formed from a piezoelectric material and a plurality of positive internal electrodes interdigitated with a plurality of negative internal electrodes throughout the stack to define active regions of the piezoelectric material which are responsive to a voltage applied across the internal electrodes, in use. An external positive electrode connects with the positive internal electrodes and an external negative electrode connects with the negative internal electrodes. The actuator is characterized in that the stack further comprises means for deliberately creating artificial cracks within the stack at a location at which the artificial cracks do not give rise to a short circuit between the internal electrodes but serve to relieve stresses within the piezoelectric material.

Piezoelectric actuator

An actuator arrangement comprising a piezoelectric actuator having a body section, a shroud which enshrouds at least part of the body section of the actuator, and at least one constrictive member disposed externally with respect to the shroud. The constrictive member applies a constrictive force to the shroud to maintain a seal between the shroud and the underlying body section of the actuator.

Actuator arrangement

In one embodiment, a coated article comprises a substrate with a coating comprising diamond like carbon layer, wherein the diamond like carbon layer comprising carbon and sulfur as terminal sulfur functional groups, wherein greater than or equal to about 70 wt % of the carbon present in the diamond like carbon layer comprises a spcarbon-to-carbon bond. The diamond like carbon layer has a concentration gradient such that the diamond like carbon layer on a side toward the substrate comprises a lower concentration of sulfur than a surface of the diamond like carbon layer disposed on a side of the layer opposite the substrate. The surface comprises about 0.1 at % to about 15 at % sulfur.

Coated article

A diesel exhaust gas system includes a diesel particulate filter (DPF), a trap for nitrogen oxides (LNT), a hydrocarbon catalytic reformer for generating reformate, and an air supply. A method for controlling the rate of burn of soot in a DPF limits the oxygen percentage in the exhaust to about 6%. The LNT may be located ahead of the DPF in the exhaust line. Reformate is directed with exhaust through the LNT. The second flow of air cools the exhaust gas and thereby prevents overheating of the DPF substrate. The DPF also may be located ahead of the LNT. Reformate is controllably combusted by the second air flow in the DPF, reducing the oxygen percentage to about 6%, thus limiting the rate at which soot in the DPF can burn and thereby preventing overheating of the DPF substrate.

Method and apparatus for controlling regeneration temperature in a diesel particulate trap

An actuator includes a piezoelectric stack within a housing that applies a compressive load to the stack. The housing may include a cylindrical tube closed at one end and may seal the stack against fluid pressure. The housing may be shorter than the length of the piezoelectric stack and may include resilient means for inducing elastic strain in the stack. The resilient means may include one or more slots extending around the circumference of the housing and/or a corrugated region of the housing to form a tension spring at a lower end of the housing. The tension spring may then serve to draw the stack into compression. The stack may include a plurality of layers of piezoelectric or piezoceramic material interspersed with a plurality of layers of electrically conductive material and connecting means for connecting the layers to a source of electrical power.

Actuator

Disclosed herein is an impact absorber for an exhaust sensor. The impact absorber comprises a collar of deformable material disposed around a housing of the exhaust sensor. The collar extends radially outward from the housing. The collar may be formed from a material selected to degrade at exhaust temperature, or the collar may be formed from a material that provides radiation shielding to a portion of the sensor after installation. The collar may be disposed around a sealing gasket. A wall may be disposed around at least a portion of a perimeter of the collar, the wall being spaced apart from a plurality of facets formed on the housing to form a recess for receiving a socket wrench tool.

Impact protection of an exhaust sensor

A piezoelectric actuated fuel injector is provided for use in conjunction with an internal combustion engine. The fuel injector includes a piezoelectric actuator for actuating an injector valve, and a hydraulic assembly for interfacing between the piezoelectric actuator and the injector valve, where the injector valve axially separates from a discharge outlet in response to longitudinal expansion of the piezoelectric actuator, thereby allowing fuel flow from the fuel injector.

Hydraulic intensifier assembly for a piezoelectric actuated fuel injector

A method is provided for detecting injection events in a piezoelectric actuated fuel injector. The method comprises the steps of: (a) providing a piezoelectric element for actuating the injector valve; (b) applying a voltage to the piezoelectric element, thereby actuating the injector valve; and (c) monitoring at least one of the voltage or current associated with the piezoelectric element, wherein changes in voltage or current are indicative of injection events in the fuel injector.

Injection valve for the fuel injection in an internal combustion engine

A fuel injection system is provided for controlling fuel pressure in a common rail through the use of a piezoelectric actuated fuel injector. The fuel injection system includes at least one fuel injector having an axially extending fuel passage therein, a control chamber disposed in the injector, an injector valve axially movable within the fuel passage in accordance with a fuel pressure in the control chamber, and a piezoelectric actuator for actuating the control valve. The fuel injection system further includes a pressure sensor for determining a fuel pressure in the common rail, and a controller electrically connected to the pressure sensor and to the piezoelectric actuator of the fuel injector.

Method for controlling fuel rail pressure using a piezoelectric actuated fuel injector

A hydraulic lash adjuster is provided for interfacing between a piezoelectric element and a control valve in a piezoelectric actuated fuel injector. The hydraulic lash adjuster includes an inner plunger having an axial passage for storing a working fluid therein, and an outer body having a socket dimensioned to receive the inner plunger. The inner plunger is movably coupled into the socket of the outer body so as to form a working chamber between a bottom outer surface of the inner plunger and a bottom surface of the socket in the outer body. The hydraulic lash adjuster further includes a feed valve assembly disposed in the passage of the inner plunger for providing the working fluid from the passage to the working chamber, thereby minimizing the volume of the working chamber.

Hydraulic lash adjuster

A glow sensor which combines functions of a diesel engine glow plug with an ion sensor for sensing engine combustion initiation and characteristics includes a ceramic rod retained in a supporting ceramic sleeve carried by a metal shell mountable in an engine cylinder head. The ceramic rod includes a heating element in a glow tip at the inner end of the rod which, in use, extends into an engine combustion chamber or pre-chamber. A conductive material such as platinum or palladium is coated on the lower end of the glow tip and connected by a conductor with a source of electric voltage. In use, the voltage produces a current carried by electrons generated by ionization of the combustion chamber gases during combustion. The current varies with the degree of ionization and the amount of electrons generated during various phases of the combustion event. The resulting information is usable in controlling engine operation or evaluating its operation for test purposes. Various construction features of disclosed embodiments include an internal conductor through the ceramic rod from the platinum or palladium material to a lead or an external conductor applied on the surface of the ceramic rod with which an insulating ceramic sleeve is utilized to mount the rod within its supporting shell. Grounding connections through an additional lead from the outer end of the ceramic rod or via metallic connections through the ceramic sleeve to the shell are alternatively disclosed.

Glow sensor-ceramic tip

An electrically controlled hydraulic actuated fuel injector wherein the amount of return fuel flow is substantially reduced without adversely affecting injection valve operation. An improved control valve armature valve disk of faster acting construction is also included. In one embodiment, dual pressurizing passages of differing diameters provide lower total fuel flow to a control chamber than the outflow through a depressurizing passage controlled by a control valve. Upon full opening of the injection valve, all return fuel flow is supplied to the control chamber through the smaller pressurizing passage, thereby reducing the requirement for pressure fuel flow. Upon closing of the control valve, cutting off discharge through the depressurizing passage, both of the dual pressurizing passages help fill the control chamber to quickly close the injection valve. The improved control valve armature is a small magnetically responsive disk fixed to a metal guide shim having a periphery clamped in the injector housing. Integral fingers of the shim are fixed to the disk, guiding its opening and closing motion free from rubbing on the housing. The fingers lie near the periphery of the shim and disk, allowing room for fuel flow between the disk and an associated solenoid to which the disk is attracted when the control valve is open. Hydraulic resistance to closing of the control valve is thus reduced.

Direct acting fuel injector

An electromagnetic unit fuel injector for use in a diesel engine includes a housing with a pump therein defined by an externally actuated plunger reciprocable in a bushing and defining therewith a pump chamber open at one end for the discharge of fuel to a spring biased, pressure actuated fuel injection nozzle. The pump chamber is also connected to a supply/spill chamber via a normally open, hollow, ported valve controlled passage to permit the ingress and egress of fuel, the valve being operated by a solenoid. The stator assembly of the solenoid is fixed to the housing over the supply/spill chamber and has a cover fixed thereto to define an armature chamber for a moveable armature. The solenoid pole piece has a stepped bore therethrough to interconnect the armature chamber and the supply/spill chamber. The armature is operatively connected to the valve by a guide pin slidably and sealingly journaled in a non-magnetic bushing fixed in the stepped bore so that the armature chamber remains dry.

Electromagnetic unit fuel injector

An electromagnetic unit fuel injector includes a pump assembly having an external actuated plunger reciprocable in a bushing with flow therefrom during a pump stroke being directed to a fuel injection nozzle of the assembly. Fuel flow from the pump can also flow through a passage means, containing a normally open, substantially pressure-balanced control valve actuated by a solenoid assembly in the valve closing direction to block drain flow during a pump stroke, as desired. A piston, actuated by discharge fuel pressure is operatively connected to the control valve to assist the solenoid in holding the control valve in a closed position.
