A method and apparatus for vacuum or air casting a molten superalloy, or other metal or alloy, containing an oxygen-reactive alloying element to form a cast part involves introducing the molten metallic material (melt) into a preheated mold having a melt reservoir, such as for example a mold pour cup, and gating for feeding the melt to one or more mold cavities. An induction coil disposed locally adjacent to the mold pour cup is energized in a manner to locally heat excess melt left in the melt reservoir to maintain it molten as the melt solidifies under vacuum or in air in the mold cavity to avoid shrinkage defects in the cast part.

A nickel-based superalloy is provided. Known nickel-based superalloys for producing components made of stem shaped single crystals do not provide sufficiently for grain boundary strength. The superalloy includes a low molybdenum content and very accurately adjusted values for elements having grain boundary strength and elements that precipitate in grain boundaries.

Method of making a composite casting involves providing a reinforcement insert with a ceramic coating, positioning the coated insert in a mold, and casting the molten metallic material into the mold where the metallic material is solidified. The composite casting produced includes the reinforcement insert disposed in a solidified metallic matrix with a ceramic coating between the reinforcement insert and the matrix.

Machineable nickel base alloy casting, consisting essentially of, in weight %, about 12.5% to 15% Cr, about 9.00% to 10.00% Co, about 3.70% to 4.30% Mo, about 3.70% to 4.30% W, about 2.80% to 3.20% Al, about 4.80% to 5.20% Ti, about 0.005% to 0.02% B, up to about 0.10% Zr, and balance essentially Ni and carbon below about 0.08 weight % to improve machinability while retaining alloy strength properties after appropriate heat treatment.

A preweld heat treatment for precipitation hardenable IN939 nickel base superalloy having a gamma matrix and gamma prime strengthening phase dispersed in the matrix comprises heating the nickel base superalloy at about 2120 degrees F. for a time to solution gamma prime phase followed by slow cooling to below about 1450 degrees F. at a rate of about 1 degree F./minute or less, and cooling to room temperature. The preweld heat treatment eliminates strain age cracking at base metal weld heat-affected zone upon subsequent heat treatment to develop alloy mechanical properties.

Directionally solidified superalloy components having a bulk sulfur concentration of less than 1 part per million by weight are provided by vacuum melting a charge to form a superalloy melt, desulfurizing the melt by contact with a calcium-bearing desulfurizing agent for a time to reduce sulfur concentration of the melt to less than 1 ppm by weight, casting the melt directly or following solidification and remelting in a ceramic investment mold, and directionally solidifying the melt as cast components without adverse bulk sulfur pick-up subsequent to desulfurization to provide castings having a sulfur content below 1 ppm, such as in the range of hundreds of parts per billion to provide significantly improved oxidation resistance.

The microstructure of forged titanium alloy components is improved by beta-transus heat treating the components, hydrogenating the components at an elevated temperature, cooling the thus-hydrogenated components to room temperature, dehydrogenating the components at an elevated temperature and cooling the dehydrogenated components to room temperature.
