The present application is directed toward an X-ray scanning system having a plurality of detectors and a controller, where a) the controller is configured to receive and identify a minimum X-ray transmission level detected by at least one detector, b) the controller compares the minimum X-ray transmission level to at least one predetermined threshold transmission level, and c) based on said comparison, the controller generates an adjustment signal. The present application further comprises an X-ray source, where the X-ray source receives an adjustment signal and is configured to adjust an X-ray pulse duration based on the adjustment signal.

Systems and methods for using an intensity-modulated X-ray source

A linear accelerator for charged particles includes a plurality of accelerating stages in a linear arrangement along a central axis. Each accelerating stage has at least one passageway radially spaced from the central axis for transmitting a beam of charged particles. Electromagnetic wave energy is coupled to the accelerating stages to produce an accelerating electric field in a region of the passageway of each of the accelerating stages. Coupling circuits couple the electromagnetic wave energy between adjacent accelerating stages. Each accelerating stage may be configured as an annular accelerating cavity or as two or more accelerating cavities disposed around the central axis. The passageway may be configured as two or more discrete apertures or a single annular aperture. Beam bending devices may be used to direct the charged particle beam through the accelerator two or more times. The linear accelerator produces a high current, high energy charged particle beam.

Hollow-beam microwave linear accelerator

An RF linear accelerator using CW or low amplitude pulsed RF excitation which can efficiently accelerate charged particles from 0.1 C to relativistic velocities in excess of 0.9 C. A charged particle source feeds charged particles having velocities of about 0.1 C into a first type RF LINAC having a plurality of side coupled resonator cavities each having a drift tube in the middle. The RF length of the cavities is set relative to the velocity of the particles and the RF excitation wavelength such that the particles experience in-phase accelerating E fields in the gaps on either side of the drift tube and are shielded from decelerating E fields while inside the drift tubes. The RF coupling cavities establish sufficient phase change between adjacent resonators such that the particles arrive in the adjacent resonator cavities in synchronization with oscillations in the standing wave therein so as to experience further acceleration. The first RF LINAC accelerates the particles to 0.5 C approximately. The charged particles are then passed through a conventional RF LINAC with a CW source which is optimized to accelerate the particles from 0.5 C to relativistic velocities. A variable phase change RF coupler couples the RF between the first RF LINAC and the second RF LINAC such that a variable degree of synchronization can be achieved such that the energy of the particle beam exiting said second RF LINAC can be modulated by varying the phase change. A conventional CW RF LINAC is also disclosed with a duty cycle controlling system for operating the RF and charged particle sources with variable duty cycles so as to achieve control of average beam power and enable higher momentary beam energies than would otherwise be the case for CW LINACs.

The invention is a transportable and reconfigurable system and method designed for on-site conversion of toxic substances to nontoxic forms. The invention includes an electron beam generator, a reaction chamber and effluent post-processing modules mounted on a carrier for transporting the system from site to site.

Transportable electron beam system and method

A control apparatus for controlling RF power supplied to first and second loads is provided. The control apparatus includes a first symmetric hybrid junction having a first port for receiving input RF power, a second port coupled to the first load and a third port coupled to a dummy load. The control apparatus further includes a second symmetric hybrid junction having a first port coupled to a fourth port of the first symmetric hybrid junction and a third port coupled to the second load. First and second variable shorts are respectively coupled to second and fourth ports of the second symmetric hybrid junction. RF power reflected by the first and second variable shorts is controllably directed through the second symmetric hybrid junction to the second load. The amplitude and phase of the RF power supplied to the second load can be controlled independently. In a preferred embodiment, the first and second loads are first and second accelerator guide sections of a linear accelerator, and the control apparatus is used to control the output beam energy of the linear accelerator.

What is disclosed is a novel toxic waste remediation system designed to provide on-site destruction of a wide variety of hazardous organic volatile hydrocarbons, including but not limited to halogenated and aromatic hydrocarbons in the vapor phase. This invention utilizes a detoxification plenum and radiation treatment which transforms hazardous organic compounds into non-hazardous substances.

An electron beam source or generator is described for the treatment of toxic materials in a treatment system in which electron beams are reacted with a flowing influent in a reaction chamber. The system is modular allowing different configurations as demanded by the site and by the clean-up job. It is also portable in that it can be easily moved from place to place. If mounted on a movable base it can be taken from place to place for use.

Electron beam system

An electron beam therapy system and a facility for using an electron beam therapy system. In the preferred embodiment, the electron beam therapy system comprises a linear accelerator, microwave source, and associated electronics disposed in a housing. The housing is mounted on a positioning means such as a C-arm to direct the electron beam to the desired site on the patient. The entire housing and positioning means is mobile and may be moved to different locations in the facility. Connectors are provided at the different locations in the facility to connect the electron beam source to a central power source within the facility.
