ADN stabilizers of aromatic nitrogen-containing heterocyclic organic compounds, such as pyridines, pyrimidines, pyrazines, and triazines substituted with amino, hydroxy or other activating groups. The stabilizers being added to the ADN in an amount of from about 0.001 weight percent to about 5 weight percent of the ADN.

ADN stabilizers

Polyethers containing pendant azide groups are cured without a catalyst by yclo-addition with diacetylenes to form triazole cross-linked, energetic binders having improved mechanical properties and stability. The polyethers typically have three hydroxy-terminated chains each of about 5000 to about 50,000 daltons. Ideally, only one azide group per chain reacts by cyclo-addition since the diacetylene is added in a proportion of about one molecule to each two polyether chains. Repeating units of glycidal azide, azidomethylmethyloxetane, bis-azidomethyloxetane/nitratomethylmethyloxetane, and bis-azidomethyloxetane/azidomethylmethyloxetane are believed effective as polyethers when used with the diethynlbenzenes 1,4-bis(ethynl)benzene, 1,4-bis(ethynlcarbonyl)benzene, and 1,3-bis(cyanoethynl)benzene. The polyethers may be further cross-liked at the hydroxyl terminations by urethane bonds.

Triazole cross-linked polymers

A substantially inert composition has mechanical properties simulating corresponding properties of an energetic composition which may include a nitrate ester and may include a particulate organic energetic filler. A nitrate ester is replaced by a mixture of inert materials having densities less than and more than the density of the ester and present in proportions such that the mixture has substantially the density of the ester. A particulate energetic organic filler is replaced by a particulate inert organic chlorine derivative having substantially the same density. When the ester is 1,2,4-butanetriol trinitrate, which may function as a plasticizer in an elastomeric energetic composition, the less dense material is a non-volatile ester, such as dimethyl phthalate, and the more dense material includes a bromoaromatic derivative as in a mixture of pentabromodiphenyl ether and an aryl phosphate. When the particulate energetic organic material includes the energetic particulate material cyclotetramethylenetetranitramine the chlorine derivative is 1,2,3,4,7,8,9,10,13,14,14-dodecachloro-,1,4,4a,5,6,6a,7,10,10a,11,12,12a-d odecahydro-1,4,7,10-dimethanodibenzo (a,e) cyclooctene. With this chlorine derivative, the inert composition may include particulate aluminum in about the same proportion as the energetic composition.

Inert simulants for energetic materials

Elastomers having a polyurethane binder are formed from a mixture including tetrastar polyethylene oxide polyol with a molecular weight of at least 16000 daltons and a plasticizer present in a ratio of at least five parts by weight to one part of the polyol and provide high tensile strength, extreme elongation, great flexibility, and absence of voids. Energetic elastomers use a nitrate ester plasticizer with a curative having a functionality of at least three and an NCO/OH equivalent ratio of about 2.5 and may include an energetic particulate filler. Inert elastomers use a non-volatile ester plasticizer, as dimethyl phthalate, with a curative having a functionality of two and an NCO/OH equivalent ratio not over 2.0. Inert elastomers simulating mechanical properties of energetic elastomers including a nitrate ester use plasticizers, as a non-volatile ester and a mixture including a bromoaromatic derivative, having densities above and below the nitrate ester density, 1,2,4-butanetriol trinitrate being replaced with dimethyl phthalate and a mixture of pentabromodiphenyl ether and an aryl phosphate. A particulate energetic organic filler is simulated by an inert organic chlorine derivative of similar density, cyclotetramethylenetetranitramine being replaced by 1,2,3,4,7,8,9,10,13,14,14-dodecachloro-1,4,4a,5,6,6a,7,10,10a,11,12,12a-do decahydro-1,4,7,10-dimethanodibenzo (a,e) cyclooctene and permitting particulate aluminum to be used in the same proportions as in an energetic elastomer.

Highly plasticized elastomers

A flame extinguishing pyrotechnic which flamelessly deflagrates to produce rimarily nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and a fluoroolefin. The flame extinguishing characteristic is achieved by reducing the content of oxygen proximate the deflagration as well as through the flame suppressing properties of particular fluoroolefins. The pyrotechnic composition contains an azido binder such as glycidyl azide polymer (GAP), an azido plasticizer, a solid tetrazole, and a perfluorocarboxylic acid salt. This composition is cured to a rubbery composite by the addition of an isocyanate.

Flame extinguishing pyrotechnic and explosive composition

A cabinet structure includes an enclosure to complementarily receive a motor vehicle radio unit and effect cooperation with a battery and speaker organization within the cabinet. The battery structure is arranged for ease of maintenance by positioning the battery upon a sliding tray relative to the housing to permit ease of disconnect and connect relative to the radio unit in servicing the battery.

The invention describes a composition and a process for making void free id propellants for rockets. This is accomplished by adding amino silanes and dimer diepoxide to GAP binder and deflagrating additive and then curing it.

Castable and elastomeric explosive compositions containing 82-85% HMX in ypropylene-polyethylene type polyurethane binder systems comprising at least 20% 3-5 .mu.HMX and an endothermically pyrolyzable binder.

Plastic bonded explosives which exhibit mild cook-off and bullet impact

High nitrogen smoke compositions capable of rapid dispersion of smoke dyes nd capable of low temperature deflagration. Some compositions are capable of flameless deflagration in air. Compositions include pressed mixtures of 5,5'-bitetrazole and smoke dyes such as red, green, or yellow dyes. Other compositions include cast cured mixtures of azido binders such as glycidyl azide polymer and dyes, some of these compositions also including 5,5'-biterazole or an ammonium salt of 5-nitraminotetrazole.

High nitrogen smoke compositions

A cast cured propellant and explosive with a higher volume percentage of ymer resulting in improved mechanical and safety properties is made from glycidyl azide polymer, an energetic plasticizer and HMX or RDX. Aluminum powder can also be added.

Insensitive high energetic explosive formulations

Gas generant compositions comprised of a high nitrogen content solid and an nergetic polymer, which release high levels of nitrogen and minimum levels of toxic and flammable gases.

Gas generant compositions containing energetic high nitrogen binders

A high energy, thermally stable plastic bonded explosive comprising HMX, a lasticizer and a fluoroalkyl acrylate or urethane fluorocarbon binder.

Plastic bonded explosives using fluorocarbon binders

A flame inhibitor coating for application to those surfaces of a solid prllant grain in a rocket motor where burning is not desired such as the aft end of a perforated propellant grain which includes a barrier layer of a mixture of amine silane, a trialkoxypropylsilylamino prepolymer, and diglycidylether of polypropylene glycol, an epoxy applied to the grain surface and allowed to cure to a polysiloxane layer, and a flame inhibitor layer applied over the barrier layer consisting of a mixture of hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene and dimeryl diisocyanate with flake aluminum which is applied over the barrier layer and allowed to cure. The barrier layer prevents migration of nitrate esters from the solid propellant grain to the flame inhibitor layer thus preventing peeling and reduction of flame inhibiting properties. The polysiloxane barrier layer is also useful in itself as a flame inhibitor and can also be employed between the insulator/liner of the rocket motor and the solid propellant grain.

Inhibitor and barrier for use with high energy rocket propellants

An improved multifunctional polyalkylene oxide binder is obtained by tailoring the cross-linking with a multifunctional polyol having a functionality of 3 or more and a molecular weight from about 12,000 to about 27,000 daltons. The binder is useful in forming castable propellants and plastic-bonded explosive compositions having high tensile strength and elongation and low volume dilatation.

Multifunctional polyalkylene oxide binders

A gas generating composition containing glycidyl azide polymer and a high trogen content additive selected from the group consisting of guanylaminotetrazole nitrate, bis(triaminoguanidinium)5,5'azotetrazole, ammonium 5-nitraminotetrazole and high bulk density nitro guanidine generates large quantities of nitrogen gas upon burning and can be used to extinguish fires.
