A valve member having a first flow path and a second flow path, and configured to control both flow paths through a filter assembly. The valve member allows control of the two flow streams in a compact space compared to traditional valves. The valve member may require less space to operate due to its compact nature as compared to traditional external valves with multiple handles that each require space to rotate. The valve member may also be used to easily shut-off flow to a filter of a filter assembly without limiting use of another filtration assembly in the same filtration system. Alternatively, the valve member may shut off flow to a corresponding filter of a stand-alone filter assembly that is not connected to another filter assembly. Also, the valve member allows less expensive and more lightweight filtration systems.

A filter element for installation in a filter element adapter assembly with a keyed retractable shroud for covering external threads configured to receive the filter element is provided. The filter element includes an end cap having one or more keyed fingers protruding axially and radially therefrom, to engage with keyed passageways on the retractable shroud.

Provided is a filter element having an annular resilient sealing device having a bead that undulates axially back and forth for mating with a correspondingly undulating top surface of a base in a filter assembly. The undulating bead provides for a fluid tight seal while restricting relative rotation of the filter element relative to the base.

A filter element and assembly which has three flow paths, has particular application to a fuel supply system for a diesel engine for filtering flow from the fuel tank as well as fuel returning from the engine that is to be recirculated back to the engine. The filter element and assembly provide a third flow path for also providing for venting of both fuel paths to a drain flow path internally of the filter element.

A filter assembly includes a housing with a central standpipe, and cover for enclosing a filter element. The filter element includes a ring of filtration media and first and second end caps. A vent orifice is formed in the first end cap into the central cavity of the media ring. A support core is disposed centrally in the media ring and extends between the first and second end caps. The core includes a separate and independent fluid channel extending from the first end cap that is fluidly connected with the vent orifice, to the second end cap. The second end cap has a central opening, and an annular sealing device bounding the opening which receives and seals to the standpipe and includes through-passages fluidly interconnecting the fluid channel in the core with flow opening(s) along the standpipe or in the lower end of the housing to a drain port.

Filter assembly with vented filter element

A fuel filter comprises a filter head having an inlet and an outlet. A filter element is connectable to a nipple portion in the filter head. An actuating projection supported by the element is engageable with a valve element in the nipple portion to open flow through the nipple portion when the filter element is attached to the filter head. The filter head includes an annular threaded peripheral flange, and the element includes a corresponding annular threaded peripheral flange which together cooperate to secure the element to the head. A manual priming pump in the filter head includes a pair of check valves to control the flow of fluid through the head when priming the filter. A heater assembly includes a heater pan which encloses the heater elements and also includes the nipple portion, formed unitary therewith.

A fuel filter comprises a head (,) having an inlet (,) and an outlet (,). The head is connected to an element (,) by a nipple portion (,) which has a valve element (,) therein. A fuel filter comprises a head (96) having an inlet (100) and an outlet (102). The head is connected to an element (266) by a nipple portion (186) which has a valve element (196) therein. An actuating projection (222, 272) is engageable with said valve element to open flow through said nipple portion when the correct element is attached hereto. The actuating projection is further supported on a central portion (220, 276) which prevents connection to a nipple portion that extends too far into the element. According to a further embodiment, the filter includes a housing (412) with a removable element (424) mounted therein. The housing has an inlet port (414) in direct fluid communication with a chamber (418). The outlet port (416) is in direct fluid communication with a central standpipe (422). The standpipe has a flow element (442) movable therein for controlling the condition of flow openings (436) in the standpipe. The cover further includes a cover projection (482) for supporting a projection (478) on end cap (460) of the filter element, which opens flow into the standpipe only when the element is installed. A centering wall (486) is also provided on the cover which is received within a recess portion (704) of a well area of the end cap (460). The removable element can include first and second filter media rings (426, 716) where fluid is introduced between the rings and flows radially inward through the first media to a first outlet (416), and radially outward through the second media ring to a second outlet (710).

Fuel filter with dual flow

A fuel filter comprises a head (96) having an inlet (100) and an outlet (102). The head is connection to an element (266) by a nipple portion (186) which has a valve element (196) therein. An actuating projection (222, 272) is engageable with said valve element to open flow through said nipple portion when the correct element is attached hereto. The actuating projection is further supported on a central portion (220, 276) which prevents connection to a nipple portion that extends too far into the element. According to a further embodiment, the filter includes a housing (412) with a removable element (424) mounted therein. The housing has an inlet port (414) in direct fluid communication with a chamber (418). The outlet port (416) is in direct fluid communication with a central standpipe (422). The standpipe has a flow element (442) movable therein for controlling the condition of flow openings (436) in the standpipe. The cover further includes a cover projection (482) for supporting a projection (478) on end cap (460) of the filter element, which opens flow into the standpipe only when the element is installed.

Fuel filter with valve device

A filter comprises a housing having a container and cover which enclose a filter element. The container includes a hollow central post which extends upwardly from the base of the container. The upper end cap for the filter element includes a base supporting the filter media and a cylinder extending downwardly within the central cavity of the filter media. A first seal is provided around the periphery of the upper end cap to seal the intersection between the container and the cover. A second seal on an upwardly-extending flange on the upper end cap seals against a corresponding downwardly-extending flange on the cover. A plurality of slots in the base of the upper end cap provide a flow path from an inlet on the cover to the upstream surface of the filter media. The lower end cap also includes a base supporting the filter media and a cylinder extending upwardly within the cavity of the filter media and defining a central lower opening for receipt of the central post. The cylinders of the upper and lower end caps axially overlap and provide a radially inwardly-facing groove which receives a third O-ring seal. The third O-ring provides a seal between the filter element and the central post of the filter element. A bolt is received within the hollow central post of the container and extends upwardly through an opening formed in the cover. A nut tightened down on the bolt fastens the cover and the container together. The head of the bolt includes a surface geometry which cooperates with the surface geometry of the bore in the central post to prevent the bolt from rotating as the nut is tightened down.

A fuel filter comprises a head (10, 96) having an inlet (14, 100) and an outlet (16,102). The head has a pumping portion (18, 104) which includes a vertically extending stepped bore (46, 120) having movable bodies (86, 88; 132, 140) therein. The fluid area between the bodies (54, 126) is connected to a variable volume area (77, 160). The head is connected to an element (98, 266) by a nipple portion (186) which has a valve element (196) therein. An actuating projection (222, 272) is engagable with said valve element to open flow through said nipple portion when the correct element is attached thereto. The failure of the nipple portion to sufficiently extend in the element, which occurs when an improper element is attached, prevents flow through the nipple portion and renders the filter inoperable. The actuating projection is further supported on a central portion (220, 276) which prevents connection to a nipple portion that extends too far into the element. As a result, only the proper element may be mounted to the head.

Fuel filter and priming pump

A filter head with an integral priming pump (10) is adapted to engage a replaceable filter or separator element (20). The head has an axial stepped bore (46). The bore has a first area (52) in fluid connection with an inlet (14) which delivers fuel to the head. A second area (54) of the bore of larger diameter is in fluid connection with a pumping chamber (77) of a pump portion (18) of the head. A third area (60) of the bore is in fluid communication with a fluid in-flow area of the element through a spud (24). A first body (86) and a second body (88) are movably positioned in the bore. The first body is sized for blocking a first opening (56) between the first and second areas. The second body is sized for blocking a larger second opening (62) which extends between the second and third areas. Manually depressing and releasing a cover member (76) of the pumping portion of the head causes pressure and vacuum to be alternatively applied in the second area of the bore. As a result, the bodies are alternatively disposed from their adjacent openings and fuel is caused to be drawn from the inlet through the bore and into an in-flow area of the element to accomplish a priming operation. In normal running condition fluid passes through the head and both bodies are disposed away from their respective openings in the bore to minimize flow restriction.
