Disclosed is a coated article having a substrate with an adherent, abrasion resistant alkene-silane plasma reaction product coating. In a preferred exemplification the coating is substantially transparent to visible light and partially absorbing to ultraviolet light. The coating is a plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition deposited coating.

Coated article and method of manufacturing the article

Disclosed is a coated article having a substrate with an adherent, abrasion resistant carbon coating. In a preferred examplification the coating is substantially transparent to visible light and partially absorbing to ultraviolet light. The coating has a relatively disordered portion at the substrate-coating interface and a relatively ordered portion remote from the substrate-coating interface. The coating is a microwave deposited coating with deposition initially at a low microwave energy, and thereafter at a high microwave energy.

A method of forming a magnetic material. The magnetic material is a solid mass of grains, and has magnetic parameters characterized by: (1) a maximum magnetic energy product, (BH).sub.max, greater than 15 megagaussoersteds; and (2) a remanence greater than 9 kilogauss. The magnetic material is prepared by a two step solidification, heat treatment process. The solidification process is carried out by growing microwave powder or snow. The microwave powder or snow is grown by introducing a reaction gas comprised of precursor compounds of the magnetic material into a substantially enclosed reaction vessel. The reaction gas is energized by providing a source of microwave energy coupled to the substantially enclosed reaction vessel while maintaining the reaction gas pressure high enough to form the powdery microwave polymerizate, condensate, or precipitate, i.e., microwave snow. The solid particles of microwave snow have a morphology characterized as being one or more of (i) amorphous; (ii) microcrystalline; or (iii) polycrystalline. The grains within the solid have, at this stage of the process, an average grain characteristic dimension less than that of the heat treated magnetic material. In the second, or heat treating, stage of the process, the atomized solid particles are heat treated to form a solid material comprised of grains meeting at grain boundaries. The grains and grain boundaries have the morphology of the magnetic material.

Method of preparing a magnetic material

The present invention provides an electrode which uses a disordered active material preferably formed by rapid solidification. The active material does not need a binder to be used as an electrode, and thus, is considered self-supporting. The material also is substantially non-porous or impermeable to an electrolyte and when used as an electrode exhibits an increase in cell capacity with improved resistance to corrosion. An electrode of the present invention provides greatly improved cycle life and energy density without a significant decrease in cell capacity. Methods of making the electrode by rapidly solidifying a disordered material are also included. A method of assembling an electrochemical cell using a self-supporting electrode includes the step of producing a disordered active material and aligning the material in a predetermined position in a cell casing.
