A leave-in-place forming system for concrete slabs and pavements that comprises a number of components including two or more of the following: a plate dowel for load transfer between adjacent concrete panels (joint stability), a divider plate, and an assembly or molding to finish the concrete to, that armors the joint and/or provides a water-tight seal to the joint. The joint assembly could incorporate an integral setting assembly or bracket or could be used with a re-usable setting bracket. The integral assembly or bracket is most suitable when it is desirable to place concrete to both sides of the joint assembly at the same time. The re-usable setting bracket is most suitable where concrete is placed to just one side of the assembly and it is desirable to re-use the setting assembly.

Leave-in-place concrete formwork combining plate dowels, divider plates, and/or finishing, armoring and/or sealing molding

Novel dowel structures and related methods are provided. In one embodiment, a unitary dowel structure is formed from a plurality of laminates. In certain embodiments, a first dowel laminate may be placed substantially above or below one or more other dowel laminates. At least one laminate may include a first material that is substantially devoid in another laminate. Upon being in communication, the laminates may form a unitary dowel structure having a first end and a second end that are configured to flex in a vertical direction without breaking to transfer stress loads from a concrete slab in communication with the first end of the unitary dowel structure and a concrete slab in communication with the second end of the unitary dowel structure.

Transferring loads across joints in concrete slabs

A tapered load plate transfers loads across a joint between adjacent concrete floor slabs. The top and bottom surfaces may taper from approximately 4 inches wide to a narrow substantially pointed end over a length of approximately 12 inches. The tapered load plate accommodates differential shrinkage of cast-in-place concrete slabs. The tapered load plate may comprise a main plate and at least one extension. When adjacent slabs move away from each other, the narrow end of the tapered load plate moves out of the void that it created in the slab thus allowing the slabs to move relative to one another in a direction parallel to the joint. Tapered load plates may be assembled into a load-plate basket with the direction of the taper alternating from one tapered load plate to the next to account for off-center saw cuts.

Tapered load plate for transferring loads between cast-in-place slabs

A template for positioning a pocket former wherein the template positions the pocket former at a fixed depth with respect to the top of concrete formwork. The template comprises a support and a body. The support positions the template; the body comprises a positioner for locating a pocket former. A spacer that connects to the support according to the desired depth of the pocket former can also be included. The template thus provides a reliable and efficient way of ensuring that a pocket former is placed at the appropriate depth.

Method for constructing adjacent cast in place concrete slabs using a template for positioning pocket formers

An improved joint edge assembly, of the type used in the construction of concrete slabs, is disclosed. The assembly comprises a longitudinal joint rail, preferably of steel, which is supported off the ground by formwork. The joint rail comprises first and second joint edge members that are connected to each other by interference-type connectors with self-release elements. A plurality of studs extends downward and outward from each of the joint edge members into the concrete slabs provide a positive mechanical connection between the slab and the joint rail. As the concrete shrinks during hardening, the self-release elements of the interference-type connectors allow the joint to freely open. The joint edge assembly thus provides a self-releasing joint between adjacent slab sections, and protects the edges of the adjacent slab sections from damage. A dowel aligner may also be integrated into the assembly, to allow proper positioning of dowels within the slab.

System of protecting the edges and construction joints of cast in place concrete slabs

A generally rectangular load plate for transferring loads between a first cast-in-place slab and a second cast-in-place slab separated by a joint. The load plate being adapted to transfer load between the first and second slabs directed essentially perpendicular to the intended upper surface of the first slab, and allowing relative movement between adjacent concrete slabs along the joint between the slabs with minimal joint opening between the slabs. A pocket former embedded within the first slab may also be included to position the load plate and create void space on the sides of the load plate to permit the relative movement. A compressible material along the side of the load plate may also be used to permit the relative movement. Neither the void space created by the pocket former nor the compressible material are dependent upon the existence of a significant gap in the joint between the concrete slabs.

A tapered load plate transfers loads across a joint between adjacent concrete floor slabs. The top and bottom surfaces may taper from approximately 4 inches wide to a narrow substantially pointed end over a length of approximately 12 inches. When adjacent slabs move away from each other, the narrow end of the tapered load plate moves out of the void that it created in the slab thus allowing the slabs to move relative to one another in a direction parallel to the joint. Tapered load plates may be assembled into a load-plate basket with the direction of the taper alternating from one tapered load plate to the next to account for off-center saw cuts. A tapered load plate and an end cap may be used to provide load transfer across an expansion joint.

Embodiments of the invention relate to an on-grade joint-stability system for on-grade concrete slabs. Embodiments of the system may include: a first on-grade concrete-slab portion; a second on-grade concrete-slab portion that is separated from the first on-grade concrete-slab portion by a joint; a first on-grade plate having a first portion and a second portion, the first portion of the first on-grade plate being positioned underneath, and connected to, the first concrete-slab portion, and the second portion of the first on-grade plate being positioned underneath the second concrete-slab portion; and a second on-grade plate having a first portion and a second portion, the first portion of the second on-grade plate being positioned underneath the first concrete-slab portion, and the second portion of the second on-grade plate being positioned underneath, and connected to, the second concrete-slab portion, such that height differentials across the joint are substantially prevented.

An improved joint edge assembly, of the type used in the construction of concrete slabs, is disclosed. The assembly comprises a longitudinal joint rail, preferably of steel, which is supported off the ground by temporary formwork. The joint rail is secured to the formwork by mounting brackets. The joint rail comprises first and second joint edge members that are connected to each other by connectors with self-release elements. A plurality of studs extends downward and outward from each of the joint edge members into the concrete slabs provide a positive mechanical connection between the slab and the joint rail. As the concrete shrinks during hardening, the self-release elements of the connectors allow the joint to freely open. The joint edge assembly thus provides a self-releasing expandable joint between adjacent slab sections, and protects the edges of the adjacent slab sections from damage. A dowel aligner may also be integrated into the assembly, to allow proper positioning of dowels within the slab.

System of protecting the edges of cast-in-place concrete slab on ground, construction joints

A load plate for transferring loads between a first cast-in-place slab and a second cast-in-place slab separated by a joint. The load plate having a substantially tapered end having substantially planar upper and lower surfaces adapted to protrude into and engage the first slab, and the load plate being adapted to transfer between the first and second slabs a load directed substantially perpendicular to the intended upper surface of the first slab. A blockout sheath embedded within the first slab could also be included. The block out sheath could have a substantially planar top surface and a substantially planar bottom surface substantially parallel to the upper surface of the first slab. The top and bottom surfaces of the blockout sheath could each have a width, measured parallel to an intersection between the joint surface and the upper surface of the first slab, that substantially decreases away from the joint surface. The width of the blockout sheath could be substantially greater than the width of the substantially tapered end at each corresponding depth along the substantially tapered end and the blockout sheath, such that the substantially tapered end could move within the sheath in a direction parallel to the intersection between the upper surface of the first slab and the joint surface.

System for transferring loads between cast-in-place slabs

A rectangular dowel bar sleeve is disclosed for receiving dowel bars and tie-bars that allows opening and closing of joints between adjacent cast-in-place slabs and pavements while allowing differential lateral movement of adjacent cast-in-place slabs in either direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the joint and while preventing differential vertical movement of the slabs on either side of the joint. A form panel having an alignment ridge and spaced apart holes for attaching blockout bars to the form panel is disclosed. The blockout bars can be used to accurately create voids extending perpendicularly from the form panel and having upper and lower surfaces that are parallel to the intended upper surface of the cast-in-place slab. A dowel bar sleeve positioner is disclosed having a flange portion for mounting the positioner to a form panel or facing and having a stub portion projecting perpendicularly from the form for accurately positioning within a cast-in-place slab a dowel bar sleeve so that the top and bottom surfaces of the dowel bar sleeve are parallel to the intended upper surface of the slab.

Dowel bar sleeve system and method

An apparatus for positioning a dowel within a concrete slab is disclose. The apparatus comprises a substantially planar mounting flange that is used to mount the apparatus onto a wooden form, and a dowel guide that extends perpendicularly from the plane of the mounting flange. Together, the mounting flange and the dowel guide define a dowel passage that is aligned with a corresponding hole in the wooden form. The dowel passage allows a dowel to be slipped through the apparatus and through the hole in the form, and to extend into the region where the slab is to be poured. The invention allows dowels to be properly and consistently aligned before and during the pouring of a concrete slab.
