A technique enables control over flow in a wellbore with a flow control system. The flow control system combines a flow reduction mechanism with a flow control device, such as a valve. The flow reduction mechanism comprises a closure member which can be selectively moved between an unactuated and actuated position, allowing relatively greater flow through the flow control device in the unactuated position. The flow reduction mechanism actuates prior to or in conjunction with the flow control device to reduce flow and thus reduce the loading forces that would otherwise act against the flow control mechanism upon closure of the flow control device.

System and method for controlling flow in a wellbore

An embodiment of a valve that is operable from one position to another position upon relief of an applied pressure includes a housing having a bore; a valve member disposed with the housing, wherein the valve member is actuated to one position in response to a certain applied pressure and actuates toward another position upon relief of the certain applied pressure; and a relief system relieving the pressure applied to the valve member when the applied pressure falls below a selected pressure level.

A fluid communication nipple including a tubular mandrel having an interior surface defining an internal bore and a passageway extending substantially lengthwise along a portion of the mandrel. The passageway is defined by an exterior wall section and an interior wall section, wherein the interior wall section extends outward from the interior surface into the bore. When it is desired to establish fluid communication through the passageway between the exterior and interior of the nipple an opening is formed through the internal wall section.

A tool for making a cut inside a downhole tool, including a housing adapted to move in the downhole tool, a plurality of openings in a wall of the housing that provides a passage from inside the housing to an exterior of the housing, a plurality of cutters disposed in the housing that are adapted to protrude from the plurality of openings to the exterior of the housing, wherein the plurality of cutters provides 360 degree cutting regardless of the orientation of the tool, and an actuation mechanism adapted to force the plurality of cutters to protrude through the plurality of openings.

Apparatus and methods for establishing secondary hydraulics in a downhole tool

A subsurface safety valve having a valve member with a pressure equalizing mechanism is provided. The valve member includes a bore therethrough for receiving an equalizing plug. A beam is attached to the upper surface of the valve member for transferring downward motion of a flow tube to unseat the equalizing plug, and thereby establish fluid communication through the valve member prior to the opening of the valve member. A retention member is attached to the lower surface of the valve member to upwardly bias the equalizing plug within the plug bore of the valve member.

Pressure equalizing safety valve for subterranean wells

In a broad aspect, the invention relates to an improved downstop seal for use with a rod-piston actuator of a surface controlled subsurface safety valve, wherein the rod-piston actuator has a beveled shoulder formed thereon. The improved downstop seal has a resilient, primary, sealing member having a beveled sealing surface to matingly engage with a portion of the beveled shoulder of the rod-piston actuator; and further has a non-resilient, secondary, sealing member having a beveled sealing surface to matingly engage with a portion of the beveled shoulder of the rod-piston actuator.

Surface controlled subsurface safety valve downstop seal

A subsurface safety valve has a tubular valve housing, a valve closure member movable between an open and a closed position, an axially shiftable flow tube for opening the valve closure member, a spring for biasing the flow tube to a closed position, a piston and cylinder assembly to move the flow tube to an open position, and a plug inserted within an opening in the valve housing. This opening is in fluid communication with the piston and cylinder assembly. The plug is adapted to be displaced from the opening to lock out the safety valve, and to establish secondary hydraulic fluid communication with an interior of the safety valve in order to operate secondary tools, such as wireline set secondary valves, inserted into the locked out safety valve.

Subsurface safety valve

An injection valve for use in a well having a valve closure element positioned below a valve seat moving between an open position to a closed position on the valve seat for blocking off upward flow through the bore, but allowing downward flow. A flow tube is telescopically movable in the housing for controlling the movement of the valve closure member and a piston is movable in the housing and connected to the flow tube and exposed to fluid in the bore. An upwardly facing shoulder on the flow tube receives a retrievable orifice member for providing a force for fully opening the valve when fluid is injected downwardly through the bore. A retrievable lockout sleeve is provided to lock the valve open when the retrievable orifice is removed.
