A request to access a virtual tape volume is identified and a lock status is maintained for the virtual tape volume. The lock status includes a shared status and an exclusive lock status. In shared status, it is determined whether the request includes a request for write access to the virtual tape volume. Concurrent access to the virtual tape volume can be allowed by two or more applications during the shared status based at least in part on whether the applications request for write access to the virtual tape volume.

At least one security parameter associated with a security profile of the file is identified. It is determined whether to encrypt the file by applying at least one security rule to the security parameter. The security rule includes selection criteria. The file is encrypted if the security rule indicates the file should be encrypted. The file is stored on the storage device.

The present invention is directed to a method and system for intercepting transactions for encryption. In accordance with a particular embodiment of the present invention, an application for a storage device is monitored. A transaction for the storage device is intercepted. An encryption request within the transaction is identified. Performance of the transaction is emulated by performing the encryption request in a predetermined exit point of the application.

Systems and methods are provided for encrypting data, generating encryption keys, and generating encryption indicators. An operating system intercept detects information indicating that a file will be encrypted and, in respond, sets device-level flags indicating encryption and also establishes one or more encryption keys to be used in the encryption process. A second intercept detects an input/output event and, in response, calls an encryption application to encrypt (or decrypt) the data before it is written to (or read from) the data storage device.
