A method includes determining a total forward power using a frequency domain version of a forward signal transmitted over a cable/connector system to one or more antennas. The method includes determining a total reflected power using a frequency domain version of a reflected signal including a reflected version of the forward signal. The method also includes determining a condition of the cable/connector system using the total forward power and the total reflected power. The method may include determining an estimated reflection coefficient based on the total forward power and the total reflected power and associating the estimated reflection coefficient with the condition of the cable/connector system. Apparatus, program products, and software are also disclosed.

VSWR estimation using spectral analysis to suppress external interference

A method includes accessing sets of correlation values, each set corresponding to a correlation performed between a number of first samples and a same number of second samples. The sets of correlation values were determined by aligning the number of the first samples with selected second samples and sliding the number of first samples across the second samples to select different sets of the second samples. The first samples are samples of a forward signal transmitted over a cable/connector system to one or more antennas, and the second samples are samples of a reflected RF signal that comprises a reflected version of the forward signal. The method includes determining a maximum value from the plurality of sets of correlation values, and associating the maximum value with a return loss of the cable/connector system. Apparatus, computer programs, and program products are also disclosed.

VSWR estimation using correlation to suppress external interference

A forward error correction (FEC) method is provided including an FEC dynamic central station and a plurality of FEC dynamic remote stations that transmit bearer data and corresponding error correction data therebetween during a plurality of time frames. The error rate of the communication channel is measured and the amount of error correction data transmitted is accordingly and dynamically adjusted, so that the minimum amount of overhead required to effectively transmit the error correction data is used.

Dynamic forward error correction

A transreceiver allows efficient operation in a full or half-duplex TDD or FDD system. The preferred transreceiver includes a common set of filters used for both FDD (Frequency Division Duplex) and TDD (Time Division Duplex) operation in a given range of frequencies thereby reducing circuitry count and implementation costs. Thus, the transreceiver of the present invention can operate in FDD operation or TDD operation.

Filtering method to allow FDD and TDD operations in PCS transreceivers

Apparatus and methods are provided for regulating the power consumption within a wireless communications mobile handset. A base station transmits an RF power output designating signal that indicates a desired level of the RF power output from the mobile handset. The mobile handset receives the RF power output designating signal, where it is used to set the level of the DC power supplied to the mobile handset. In this manner, the minimum amount of power necessary to maintain linear operation of the mobile handset is expended in the mobile handset. The DC power level is set by internally generating a control signal. The level of the control signal is dictated by the desired level of the RF power output as indicated by the received RF power output designating signal. The control signal is then applied to an RF amplifier circuit contained within the mobile handset to set the DC power level. The DC power level can be further varied from the set DC power level in proportion to an envelope of an RF input signal to provide a more power-efficient mobile handset.

Methods and apparatus for adjusting DC power consumption in mobile handset

A forward error correction (FEC) method is provided that operates in a multiple access format, such as, e.g., a Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) format. An FEC transband central station and a plurality of FEC transband remote stations transmit data and corresponding error correction data therebetween during time frames. The time frames are divided into in-band time slots during which the traffic data is transmitted and out-of-band time slots during which the error correction data may be transmitted. The FEC transband remote stations that are assigned to the out-of-band time slots are efficiently and dynamically adjusted during communication.

Filtering method to allow FDD and TDD operation in PCS transreceivers

An adaptable DC power consumption circuit is provided, wherein a controller alternately operates an RF amplifier during a high RF output power condition, and bypasses the RF amplifier during a low RF output power condition. In this manner, linear operation of the RF amplifier can be maintained while maximizing the power efficiency of the RF amplifier.

Bypassable amplifier

A cellular telephone system maintains a database of prepaid cellular telephone service accounts, including an amount of money remaining in each account. The system uses modems in a blank-and-burst mode to send data and commands over a voice channel. When a call is attempted over a mobile unit, the system sends identification information stored in the mobile unit to a debit processing unit, which then permits the call and debits the associated account if a sufficient amount of money remains in the account, otherwise it terminates the call.

Pre-paid cellular telephone system

An adaptable DC power consumption circuit is provided, wherein the voltage supplied to an RF amplifier is dynamically varied from a desired level. A feedback control loop is formed between the power terminal and a control terminal of a variable voltage supply. A controller influences the feedback control loop to properly set the supply voltage at the desired minimum level necessary to maintain linear operation of the RF amplifier. The output of the RF amplifier influences the feedback control loop to dynamically vary the supply voltage from the desired level. In this manner, linear operation of the RF amplifier can be maintained while maximizing the power efficiency of the RF amplifier.

Amplifier with dynamatically adaptable supply voltage

A radiotelephone system provides a voice channel for carrying voice signals between a mobile unit and a called or calling unit. A first modem in the mobile unit and a second modem connected to a point along the voice channel employ a 'blank-and-burst' method of communication to provide a data channel between a first data device connected to the mobile unit and a second data device connected to the second modem. The data channel enables the data devices to communicate with each other seemingly concurrently, and with minimal interference, with the voice signals that are being carried over the voice channel and without requiring modifications to any base station.

Voice band-based data transmission system

An adaptable DC power consumption circuit is provided, wherein the current supplied to an RF amplifier is dynamically varied from a desired level. A feedback control loop is formed between the power terminal and the control terminal of the RF amplifier. A controller influences the feedback control loop to properly set the supply current at the desired minimum level necessary to maintain linear operation of the RF amplifier. The output of the RF amplifier influences the feedback control loop to dynamically vary the supply current from the desired level. In this manner, linear operation of the RF amplifier can be maintained while maximizing the power efficiency of the RF amplifier.
