Fibrous system for continuously capturing metals from an aqueous stream

An unique filtration device ( ) which removes acidic contaminants such as H2S and SO2 from a fluid stream through the use of partially hollow wicking fibers ( ) impregnated with an effective amount of alkaline-generating chemical compounds, preferably also containing an effective amount of a compound with elements from Group II and Group 6-12 in &plus;2 oxidation state, and most preferably also containing an effective amount of solid fine particles ( ). A nonwoven filter mat ( ) is formed from a plurality of the elongated fibers ( ) each having at least one internal channel ( ) connected to the fiber outer surface via an elongated opening ( ). High efficient acid-gas-removing wicking fiber filters

A fluid filter increases the useful life of the filtered fluid by removing contaminants therefrom, and may optionally provide for in-line delivery of additives to the filtered fluid. The filter may be an oil filter, a fuel filter, or other fluid filter. The fluid filter includes a casing which defines a hollow space therein, a mechanically active filter element within that space, and a chemically active filter element also retained within the hollow space proximate the mechanically active filter element. The chemically active filter element includes a nonwoven web made up of a plurality of fibers. Each fiber has a longitudinally extending internal cavity formed therein, and a corresponding longitudinally extending slot opening from that internal cavity to the outer surface of the fiber. Preferably each fiber as multiple lobes extending radially outwardly from a central stem, and each lobe cooperates with an adjacent lobe to define a longitudinally extending internal cavity and a corresponding slot therebetween. In order to remove contaminants or to supply additives to lubricating oil, the internal cavities, of each of the chemically active filter fibers, are supplied with a chemical reagent therein.

Multi-stage fluid filter, and methods of making and using same

The internal channels (22) of wicking fibers (20) are filled with a selected liquid (18) form of a prepolymerized polymer or monomers and related reagents and then the polymerization reaction is carried out under suitable conditions to form a fiber with desired properties. Fibers with the properties of the formed polymeric products are conveniently obtained thereafter. This provides a convenient way to obtain engineered fibers by directly polymerizing the monomers in the wicking fiber (20) channels (22). The wicking fibers (20) include internal longitudinal cavities or channels (22) each with a relatively small longitudinal extending opening (24). The wicking fibers (20) are filled with the selected liquid through capillary action by which the individual wicking fibers (20) rapidly draw the selected liquid, with which they comes into contact, through the internal cavities (22). The selected liquid remains within the wicking fiber cavities (22) and generally does not enter the space between the wicking fibers yet through the longitudinal openings (24) the liquid is in full communication with the environment surrounding the wicking fiber (20). The formed solid polymer is retained in the channels (22) of the wicking fiber (20).

A nonwoven filter media or mat (10) formed from a plurality of elongated generally hollow fibers (20) each having an internal cavity (22) which has an opening (24), smaller than the cavity width, to the fiber (20) surface and each retaining within the internal cavity (22) an electrically conductive material. The electrically conductive material can be a large number of relatively small conductive solid particles (18). The small solid particles (18), which can be graphite are permanently entrapped within the longitudinal cavities (22) of the fibers (20) without the use of an adhesive. The electrically conductive material can also be a selected liquid. In the case of a liquid, the wicking fibers (20) are filled with the selected conductive liquid through capillary action by which the individual wicking fibers (20) rapidly draw the selected electrically conductive liquid, with which they come into contact, through the internal cavities (22). The electrically conductive material, either solid particles or a liquid, remains within the wicking fiber cavities (22) and generally does not enter the space between the wicking fibers yet through the longitudinal openings (24).

An improved windshield wiper system having a cumulative ozone indicator (20) disposed in proximity to a wiper blade (10) which gives a visual cue when the wiper blade (10) should be replaced. The exposure to a predetermined amount of ozone causes the indicator (20) to change its color and thus communicate to the vehicle operator that it is time to change wiper blade (10). Rather than changing color the indicator (20) can be a pop up device which can be observed by the vehicle operator. To allow a reaction with ozone but to prevent damage from contact with a liquid the indicator (20) is covered with a gas permeable and liquid impermeable material.

A nonwoven filter media or mat (1) formed from a plurality of elongated generally hollow fibers (20) each having an internal cavity (22) which has an opening (24), smaller than the cavity width, to the fiber (20) surface and each retaining within its internal cavity (22) an electrically chargeable powder particle material. The electrically chargeable material can be a pure electrically chargeable dielectric powder material or a mixture of oppositely chargeable dielectric powder particles (18). The small solid particles (18), which can be PTFE, CTFE, halogenated polymers or any other electrically chargeable dielectric powder particles, are permanently entrapped within the longitudinal cavities (22) of the fibers (20) without the use of an adhesive. The electrically charged material remains within the wicking fiber cavities (22) and generally does not enter the space between the wicking fibers yet through the longitudinal openings (24) the electrically charged material is in full communication with the fluid stream flowing past the fibers (20).

A unique filtration device (10) which continuously removes gas phase contaminants from an air stream through the use of partially hollow wicking fibers (20) impregnated with a fine solid carbon powder (18) or zeolites and formed into a fiber filter (12) with a selected chemisorptive liquid applied to one side of the fiber filter (12) and large carbon particles (19) applied to the other side of the fiber filter (12). The air stream to be cleaned is directed through filter element (12) which can capture the gas phase contaminants. The wicking fibers (20) include internal longitudinal cavities (22) filled with the fine carbon powder (18) and each having a relatively small longitudinal extending opening (24). The wicking fibers (20), to a shallow depth on one side of filter (12), are filled with the selected contaminant removing chemisorptive liquid through capillary action by which the individual wicking fibers (20) rapidly draw the selected chemisorptive liquid, with which they come into contact, through the internal cavities (22). The chemisorptive liquid and fine carbon powder (18) or zeolite powder remain within the wicking fiber cavities (22) and generally do not enter the space between the wicking fibers yet through the longitudinal openings (24) the fine carbon particles (18) and the chemisorptive liquid are in full fluid communication with the air stream flowing past the fibers (20).

Multicomponent depth odor control filter and method of manufacture

A unique filtration device (10) which continuously removes gas phase contaminants from an air stream through the use of partially hollow wicking fibers (20) impregnated with a fine solid powder and a selected chemisorptive liquid (18) which can capture the gas phase contaminants. The wicking fibers (20) are generally disposed to extend in the same direction and are formed into a filter element (12). The air stream to be cleaned is directed through filter element (12). The wicking fibers (20) include internal longitudinal cavities (22) filled with a fine powder and each having a relatively small longitudinal extending opening (24). The wicking fibers (20) are filled with the selected contaminant removing chemisorptive liquid through capillary action by which the individual wicking fibers (20) rapidly draw the selected chemisorptive liquid, with which they come into contact, through the internal cavities (22). The chemisorptive liquid and fine powder remains within the wicking fiber cavities (22) and generally does not enter the space between the wicking fibers yet through the longitudinal openings (24) the chemisorptive liquid is in full fluid communication with the air stream flowing past the fibers (20).

Wicking fiber with solid particulates for a high surface area odor

A unique odor filtration device (10) which continuously removes odor causing gas phase contaminants from an air stream through the use of partially hollow wicking fibers (20) impregnated with a selected liquid (18) which can capture odor causing gas phase contaminants. The odor removing liquid (18) is a chemical composition including sodium permanganate in combination with either sodium carbonate or sodium phosphate. The odor absorbing liquid (18) can include specialized additives such as transition metal salts and other agents such as sodium iodide for additional and broader odor removal coverage. The wicking fibers (20) are formed into a filter element (12) which extends from a chamber (16) through which the air stream to be cleaned is directed into a stripping chamber (19). The odor causing contaminants are conveyed to from chamber (16) to chamber (19) by a concentration factor induced molecular migration. The wicking fibers (20) include internal longitudinal cavities (22) each with a relatively small longitudinal extending opening (24). The wicking fibers (20) are filled with the selected contaminant removing liquid through capillary action by which the individual wicking fibers (20) rapidly draw the selected liquid, with which they come into contact, through the internal cavities (22). The absorption liquid (18) remains within the wicking fiber cavities (22) and generally does not enter the space between the wicking fibers yet through the longitudinal openings (24) the liquid is in full communication with the air stream flowing past the fibers (20).

An air filtration or fluid treatment system includes a nonwoven filter media or mat (10) formed from a plurality of elongated generally hollow fibers (20) each having an internal cavity (22) which has an opening (24) to the fiber surface and each retaining within the internal cavity a large number of relatively small solid particles (18) which interact with the air or other fluid stream to be treated. The solid adsorbent particles (18), such as activated carbon, are permanently entrapped within the longitudinal cavities (22) of the fibers (20) without the use of an adhesive or without being embedded onto or within the polymer fiber.
