A hermetically sealed reciprocating refrigeration compressor has a suction gas arrangement including a suction gas plenum formed integral with a cylinder block for supplying suction gas directly to a cylinder so as to eliminate the need for external suction gas conduits. Apertures are formed about the circumference of the cylinder for receiving suction gas directly from the suction gas plenum. Pistons are provided with multiple suction gas entrances and a semi-toroidal suction valve to provide an efficient way of introducing suction gas into a compression chamber during a suction stroke of the compressor. A spherical discharge valve assembly is provided in a valve plate adjacent the compression chamber for improved flow characteristics and increased through flow area.

A compressor crankcase heater bracket and method of assembly is shown in which a bracket fastened to the compressor accommodates a metal spring clip holding the heater. The method of assembly results in a quick and easy assembly process without compromising the integrity of the transfer of heat to the housing. Thermal transfer is further aided by conduction through the clip and bracket.

A discharge valve assembly, comprising a reed valve and an overlying valve retainer, is cantilever mounted on the axially outer surfaces of cast iron main and outboard bearings of a rotary vane compressor. Each valve assembly includes a round mounting end having an off-center hole extending through the valve and retainer, and an opposite end associated with opening and closing a discharge port extending through the bearing. The mounting end fits within a counterbore on the outer bearing surface and is retained therein by means of a rivet or the like through the off-center hole. The valve assembly is prevented from rotating about the rivet by the sidewall of the counterbore to maintain proper orientation of the valve and retainer so that they precisely cover the discharge port.

A shield for an automotive compressor clutch assembly comprises a resilient hollow part that attaches to the rotatable clutch pulley by means of an annular lip located along the inside of the hollow part and an annular groove located along the outer rim of the pulley, thereby covering the outside surface of the pulley together with the clutch mechanism located adjacent thereto. A cooperating notch and land arrangement prevents relative rotational movement between the shield and the pulley.
