A portable communication device uses a first electrostatic antenna element and a second electrostatic antenna element and circuitry which is coupled to the first antenna element and to the second antenna element and which derives operating power from an electrostatic field in the vicinity of the first and second antenna elements. The electrostatic field may be provided by an array of exciter elements containing both horizontal and vertical exciter elements so that at some point as a communication device is moved across the exciter antenna array, the device will have sufficient power coupled to it to power up and become operational.

An object identification system and method detects the presence of a target object in a field of inspection and in one aspect of the invention, generates a first signal if the object is left in the field of inspection for more than a minimum threshold period of time. In a second aspect a second signal is generated if the object is introduced to the field of inspection more than a minimum threshold number of times (having been withdrawn from the field of inspection in the interim) within a minimum threshold period of time.

Electronic reader for reading a special characteristic of an object

A radio frequency identification system includes a transponder and a transponder reader. The transponder, responsive to an interrogation signal continuously transmitted by the transponder reader, generates a transponder signal modulated by an identification signal readable by the transponder reader. The identification signal includes a synchronization portion, a data portion, an output format identification portion, and an error detection portion. The output format identification portion is used by the reader to configure itself for communication with an attached controller. In another aspect of the invention, the transponder reader may be configured to read FSK as well as PSK encoded signals from the transponder.

Radio frequency identification system

A reader for radio frequency identification tags having at least one magnetic field transmitting and receiving coil which is oriented in a given plane and which is responsive to a received magnetic exciter field of a first frequency to produce and radiate an identifying magnetic field comprised of a carrier at a second different frequency modulated by an identifying code. The reader comprises a first circuit for producing a radio frequency signal of the first frequency; a first magnetic field coupling arrangement connected to the output of said first circuit for producing a corresponding exciter field at the first frequency to be magnetically coupled to the receiving coil of the tag, with the first magnetic field coupling arrangement including a solenoidal exciter coil having at least one wound exciter winding and a longitudinal axis disposed substantially perpendicular to the plane of the tag coil; a second magnetic field coupling arrangement for receiving a magnetic field of the second frequency produced by the tag and providing a corresponding electrical signal, with the second magnetic field coupling arrangement including at least one receiver coil disposed adjacent one end of the solenoidal coil; and circuitry connected to the receiver coil for decoding the received electrical signal. Preferably the tag is disposed on the lid of a trash or waste bin with the tag coil being substantially horizontal and the axis of the exciter coil is disposed substantially vertically.
