An algorithm according to an embodiment of the present invention provides for latent signal detection of adverse events. Embodiments infer the presence of adverse drug events from large observational databases housed by the FDA, WHO, and other governmental organizations. The disclosed algorithms do not require the adverse event to be reported explicitly. Instead, the algorithms infer the presence of adverse events through more common secondary effects. In an embodiment, machine learning techniques are used for this purpose.

Signal detection algorithms to identify drug effects and drug interactions

Methods for developing an ontology of pharmacogenomics (PGx) relationships starting from a lexicon of key pharmacogenomic entities and a syntactic parse is described. The syntactic structure of PGx statements is used to systematically extract commonly occurring relationships and to map them to a common schema. In an embodiment, extracted relationships have a 70-87.7% precision and involve not only key PGx entities such as genes, drugs, and phenotypes (e.g., VKORC1, warfarin, clotting disorder), but also critical entities that are frequently modified by these key entities (e.g., VKORC1 polymorphism, warfarin response, clotting disorder treatment).

Method and system for extraction and normalization of relationships via ontology induction

A library of query templates and a dictionary that relates keywords to more abstract concepts are first prepared on a computer system. Each template contains one or more typed variables. A query is then generated by entering into the system one or more keywords. Each keyword is abstracted to a concept. Advantageously, each concept may be further refined, for example, by additional abstraction, or by picking one concept from several candidates, or by successive abstraction and rejection of different keywords until an acceptable concept is found. Next, for the concepts that are obtained, the system finds all query templates are then instantiated with those concepts or with the keywords used to form the concepts. The user then selects the most appropriate query from among the instantiated query templates. The invention may be practiced in formulating queries to access any set of information sources. It is particularly useful to use the invention to access distributed, heterogeneous databases which do not have a single standardized vocabulary or structure.

Method and apparatus for knowledgebase searching

A method for transparently monitoring and/or modifying web browsing activities over an entire computer network does not require modification of client software and can be implemented on a single server. By rerouting HTTP requests through a centralized gateway server, the sequence and timing of URLs accessed by individual clients are recorded, providing the full information required to recreate a user session. The client HTTP requests are rerouted through the gateway server by modifying URLs within HTML documents. For each document sent to the client, any original URL which points to another server is modified so that it points to a CGI script program on the gateway. The gateway server then fetches the requested document from the other server, modifies the URLs within the document, and passes it on to the client. Thus, subsequent requests from the client will automatically be directed through the gateway server. The method permits tracking individual web sessions and provides valuable information about user behavior. This information can be used for general purpose evaluation of web-based user interfaces to information systems. The technique can also be used to modify a browsing experience by layering or stripping hypertext content or functionality.
