A differential assembly includes a first case half. A second case half is connected to the first case half. The first and second case halves define a gear chamber. The first and second case halves each include pockets formed therein. A differential gear set is disposed in the gear chamber. First and second clutch packs are disposed in the pockets between the first and second case halves and differential gear set. The clutch packs engage the first and second case halves and the differential gear set defining a limited slip. A locking collar is disposed in a cavity formed in one of the first or second case halves. An electric actuator mechanism is coupled to the locking collar selectively moving the locking collar into engagement with the differential gear set locking the differential.

Collar type differential which combines limited slip and locking capability

A locking differential assembly includes a differential case defining an axis of rotation. A lock collar is selectably engageable with a first side gear to selectably prevent the first side gear and a second side gear from rotating relative to the differential case. A coil disposed at an end of the differential case. An armature selectably magnetically actuatable by the coil. An armature position indicator arm rigidly attached to the armature for simultaneous movement with the armature. At least two relay pin assemblies are each connected to the lock collar and connected to the armature to space the lock collar a predetermined distance from the armature for translation parallel to the axis of rotation. A sensor connected to the differential case to detect a proximity of the armature position indicator arm to the sensor and to output an electrically detectable signal indicative of an engagement status of the lock collar.

Locking differential assembly

A differential comprises a case and a side gear. The differential further comprises a lockout mechanism having a first lock plate comprising a first side and a toothed side; a second lock plate comprising a first side facing the case and a toothed second side facing the toothed side of the first lock plate; a cam plate axially between the side gear and the first lock plate; and a clutch pack axially between the cam plate and the first lock plate. The differential further comprises an engagement mechanism configured to actuate the cam plate to rotate.

A differential including a case (), a side gear (), a first lock plate () having a first side and a toothed side, and a second lock plate () having a first side facing the case and a toothed second side facing the toothed side of the first lock plate (). An electronically locking differential assembly constructed in accordance to the present disclosure includes a differential casing, a first and second side gear, a lock actuation assembly and a lock detect mechanism. The lock actuation mechanism selectively moves between a locked state where the side gears are fixed for concurrent rotation and an unlocked state where the side gears rotate relative to each other. The lock detect mechanism detects whether the lock actuation mechanism is in the locked, unlocked state, and an intermediate position between the locked and unlocked state; then provides feedback to the driver on the state of the lock actuation mechanism.

Electronically actuated locking differential having lock detection mechanism

An electronically locking differential assembly constructed in accordance to the present disclosure includes a differential casing, a first and second side gear, a lock actuation assembly and a lock detect mechanism. The first gear defines a first shaft opening configured to provide a first torque transmitting connection with a first output shaft received within the first output shaft opening. The second side gear defines a second output shaft opening configured to provide a second torque transmitting connection with a second output shaft received within the second output shaft opening. The lock actuation mechanism selectively moves between a locked state where the side gears are fixed for concurrent rotation and an unlocked state where the side gears rotate relative to each other. The lock detect mechanism detects whether the lock actuation mechanism is in the locked or unlocked state.
