A method for preventing damage in a bearing of a generator of an electrical power system having a power conversion assembly with a first converter coupled to a second converter, and the power conversion assembly electrically coupled to the generator. Further, the method includes monitoring a phase current and voltage of the first converter. The method also includes calculating a common mode power using the phase current and the voltage of the first converter. Moreover, the method includes comparing the common mode power to a predefined power threshold. The method also includes determining whether the common mode power is indicative of degradation in at least one of a bearing insulation or a ground brush based on the comparison of the common mode power to the predefined power threshold.

System and method for detecting bearing insulation and ground brush health in a generator

A method for operating a generator of a wind turbine includes generating, via a controller, a time series of a plurality of operating signals of the generator. The method also includes applying at least one algorithm to the time series of the plurality of operating signals of the generator to generate a processed time series of the of the plurality of operating signals of the generator. Moreover, the method includes identifying, via the controller, patterns in the processed time series of the plurality of operating signals of the generator to identify one or more of at least one slip event occurring in the slip coupling or a surface health of the slip coupling. Further, the method includes implementing, via the controller, a control action when the at least one slip event occurring in the slip coupling is identified or the surface health of the slip coupling is indicative of degradation in the slip coupling.

System and method for slip detection and surface health monitoring in a slip coupling of a rotary shaft

A method for preventing damage in a bearing of a generator of an electrical power system includes monitoring one or more electrical signals of a power conversion assembly of the electrical power system. The method also includes estimating an impedance path of common mode current from a terminal to ground using the operating parameter(s) of the power conversion assembly. Further, the method includes determining a one or more magnitudes and/or a one or more phase angles of the impedance path at different frequencies, such a switching frequency and/or harmonics. Moreover, the method includes determining whether the impedance path is indicative of degradation in at least one of bearing insulation or a ground brush of the generator based on a change in the one or more magnitudes and/or the one or more phase angles. In addition, the method includes implementing a control action when the impedance path is indicative of degradation in the bearing insulation and/or the ground brush of the generator.

A method for preventing damage in a bearing of a generator includes monitoring, via a controller, one or more electrical signals of the power conversion assembly. The method also includes converting the electricals signal(s) to a frequency domain. Further, the method includes extracting one or more spectral components in frequency bands of the frequency domain around one or more known characteristic frequencies of the bearing. Moreover, the method includes determining at least one characteristic of the spectral component(s) in the frequency bands. In addition, the method includes comparing the characteristic(s) of the spectral component(s) in the frequency bands to at least one baseline value. The method further includes generating a fault signal or a baseline signal for the bearing based on the comparison. In response to the fault signal being generated, the method includes implementing a control action.

System and method for detecting degradation in wind turbine generator bearings

A system includes a generator coupled to an engine and configured to generate electricity from rotational movement of a shaft of the engine, a motor configured to be driven by the generator through one or more power conversion components, the motor configured to drive a load, a sensor configured to measure generator output, and a controller configured to detect engine imbalance based on a frequency content of a signal output from the sensor in response to a contribution to the frequency content from the one or more power conversion components and/or the load of the motor being less than a threshold value.

A power system including at least one electrical machine, plurality of doubly fed induction machines (DFIMs), a plurality of first power converters, and a speed regulation unit is presented. The electrical machine includes a mechanical input end and at least one of a first stator winding terminal and a first rotor winding terminal. Each DFIM includes a second stator winding terminal, a second rotor winding terminal, and a mechanical output end. At least one of the first stator winding terminal and the first rotor winding terminal is coupled to one of first power converters and the second rotor winding terminal of each DFIM is coupled to one of the first power converters. The method further includes determining a torque profile associated with one or more combinations of the sinusoidally distributed virtual electrical machines. Finally, the method includes detecting the presence of an anomaly in the mechanical drive train based on the torque profile or spectrum.

A method for a vehicle having plural electric motors includes generating motor electrical signatures for the motors. The motor electrical signatures represent one or more characteristics of electrical energy that is supplied to the motors. The method also includes identifying one or more fault measures of each of the motor electrical signatures. The fault measures are indicative of mechanical characteristics of the motors. The method includes receiving a plurality of phase voltage values and a plurality of phase current values. The method then computes a negative sequence voltage (Vn) based on the plurality of phase voltage values. The method also computes one or more operating parameters based on at least one of the plurality of phase voltage values and the plurality of phase current values. The method retrieves from a data store, one or more known Vn based on the one or more operating parameters. The method then computes a machine health indicator based on the computed Vn and the one or more known Vn, and raises an alarm based on the machine health indicator.
