Lubricant with non-terminal functional groups. The location of the functional groups minimizes free chain length and molecular weight of a lubricant while simultaneously maximizing evaporation temperature. The locations of the functional groups to the backbone of the molecule of the lubricant allows for shorter lengths of free backbone length between functional groups attached to a lubricated surface. The lubricant lubricates mechanical devices including hard disk drives. The lubricant can also be added to media or other mechanical parts in conjunction with other lubricants.

Lubricant with non-terminal functional groups

A vacuum planarization method substantially improves the surface roughness of a thermally-assisted recording (TAR) disk that has a recording layer (RL) formed of a substantially chemically-ordered FePt alloy or FePt-X alloy (or CoPt alloy or CoPt-X alloy) and a segregant, like SiO. A first amorphous carbon overcoat (OC) is deposited on the RL and etched with a non-chemically reactive plasma to remove at least one-half the thickness of OC. Then a second amorphous carbon overcoat (OC) is deposited on the etched OC. The OCis then reactive-ion-etched, for example in a H/Ar plasma, to remove at least one-half the thickness of OC. A thin third overcoat (OC) may be deposited on the etched OC

Method for planarizing a perpendicular magnetic recording disk for thermally-assisted recording (TAR)

A method and apparatus for regulating the concentration of a vapor within a hard drive are provided. In one embodiment, the method may include providing a source chemical of a vapor in a first cavity formed within a first object, providing an absorptive chemical which absorbs the vapor in a second cavity formed within the first object, and providing a third cavity formed by a hard drive housing of the hard drive. A first conductance path having a first conductance connects the first cavity to the third cavity, a second conductance path having a second conductance connects the second cavity to the third cavity, and the first conductance and the second conductance maintain a partial pressure level of the vapor within the third cavity.

Control system to regulate the concentration of vapor in a hard disk drive

The magnetic surfaces of the magnetoresistive or magnetic tunnel junction and inductive write head and magnetic recording disk of a hard disk drive are protected from corrosion by inserting a vapor phase corrosion inhibitor (VPCI) package into the disk drive for providing additives in the vapor phase of the disk drive enclosure to maintain an equilibrium and renewable adsorbed film of metal passivators on the head and disk surfaces. The VPCI package includes at least one vapor phase corrosion inhibitor (VPCI) embedded in a polymeric matrix.

Magnetic recording device with improved reliability

A disk drive having a disk with a contact start/stop (CSS) region on which a slider can rest is described. The CSS region is divided into at least three zones with the inner and outer zones having a surface topography which is different from the surface topography of the middle zone. The middle zone of the CSS region may be textured with bumps having a lower average height, a lower average density and/or a different bump diameter. The middle zone may also be left untextured. The slider is maintained over the CSS region during spin up and/or spin down.

An improved thin film metal alloy media for horizontal magnetic recording has a magnetic layer of an alloy comprising cobalt, platinum and chromium, where the chromium concentration in the alloy is greater than 17 at.%. The media exhibits unexpectedly high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and minimal time jitter, thereby resulting in a media which is capable for use at high linear recording density. The media also exhibits excellent corrosion resistance because of the chromium present in the alloy, thereby eliminating the need for a barrier layer between the magnetic layer and the protective overcoat.
