Systems and methods for repeating optical signals. A scalable transceiver based repeater includes one or more transceivers. Each transceiver includes an optical receiver that receives a channel of an optical signal. The optical transmitter in each transceiver transmits the channel received by the associated optical receiver. A switch is used to redirect the channels, which may be in an electrical form at the switch, from the optical receivers back to the optical transmitters. The switch can also be used to add/drop the channels from the repeater. The optical transmitter and/or the optical receiver of each transceiver may also include a clock/data recovery circuit (CDR). The repeater is scalable because transceivers can be added/replaced as needed. A demultiplexor can separate an optical signal into the channels that are received by the optical receivers. A multiplexor combines the channels generated by the optical transmitters.

Scalable transceiver based repeater

A telecommunications system and constituent integrated circuit that includes a post-amplifier assembly configured for communication with an optical receiver, a laser driver assembly configured for communication with the optical transmitter, and a controller assembly configured to control the post-amplifier and laser driver. The post-amplifier, the laser driver, and the controller assemblies are embodied on a single integrated circuit, thereby reducing manufacturing costs. Noise due to clock generation may be reduced by having the clock act on a transient basis, turning on when needed during the boot process, and turning off when not needed during normal operation.

Integrated post-amplifier, laser driver, and controller

A vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) module that is configured to operate in a wide temperature range without severely minimizing its lifetime or requiring excessive drive current. The VCSEL portion of the VCSEL module is tuned to operate efficiently at a higher than normal temperature. In addition to the VCSEL, the VCSEL module includes a heater and a temperature sensor that are used to maintain a particular minimum temperature that is within the efficient operation range of the VCSEL. By maintaining a temperature that is within the efficient operation range, the VCSEL module reduces the current required to operate the VCSEL and extends the overall lifetime of the VCSEL. The additional components of the VCSEL module do not interfere in any way with the signal quality produced by the VCSEL.

An exemplary optoelectronic transceiverincorporating features of the present invention is shown in FIGS.and. The transceivercontains a receiver circuit, a transmitter circuit, a power supply voltageand ground connections. The receiver circuit of the transceiver includes a Receiver Optical Subassembly (ROSA), which may contain a mechanical fiber receptacle as well as a photodiode and pre-amplifier (preamp) circuit. The ROSAis in turn connected to a post-amplifier (postamp) integrated circuit, the function of which is to generate a fixed output swing digital signal which is connected to outside circuitry via the RX+ and RX&#x2212; pins. The postamp circuitalso often provides a digital output signal known as Signal Detect or Loss of Signal indicating the presence or absence of suitably strong optical input. The postamp circuitdoes not necessarily have to be used to generate the Signal Detect or Loss of signal. In alternative embodiments, the postamp circuitcould be replaced with a CDR ('Clock Data Recovery') or a demux chip, which embodiments are not shown.
