A system and method of removing turbulence from an image of a time ordered sequence of image frames. The method comprises removing effects of turbulence from a first image of the sequence to create an initial corrected image frame; determining a number of iterations required to achieve a desired turbulence removal for a subsequent image in the sequence and satisfy a latency constraint and an available memory capacity; and determining, based on the number of required iterations, a minimum set of image frames required to remove turbulence from the subsequent image. The minimum set of image frames comprises: a number of image frames of the sequence, a number of image frames generated in an intermediate iteration of turbulence removal and the initial corrected image frame. The method further comprises using the minimum set of image frames to remove turbulence from the subsequent image of the sequence.

System and method of reducing effects of turbulence in an image

The present disclosure provides a method of correcting for a turbulence effect in a video comprising a plurality of frames. The method comprises determining a first background region and a region corresponding to a moving object in a first frame of the plurality of frames using a predetermined background model. A second background region in a second frame of the plurality of frames is then determined using the predetermined background model. A turbulence-corrected background region from the first background region and the second background region is generated and the region corresponding to the moving object and the turbulence-corrected background region is fused to form a turbulence-corrected frame. The method then updates the predetermined background model based on the turbulence-corrected frame and corrects for the turbulence effect in the second frame using the updated predetermined background model.

Method of video stabilization using background subtraction

One or more embodiments of an apparatus, system and method of compensating image data for phase fluctuations caused by a wave deforming medium, and storage or recording mediums for use therewith, are provided herein. At least one embodiment of the method comprises capturing, by a sensor of an imaging system, first image data and second image data for each of a plurality of pixel positions of the sensor, the sensor capturing an object through a wave deforming medium causing a defocus disparity between the first image data and second image data; and determining the defocus disparity between the first image data and the second image data, the defocus disparity corresponding to a defocus wavefront deviation of the wave deforming medium. The method may further comprise compensating the image data captured by the sensor for phase fluctuations caused by the wave deforming medium using the determined defocus disparity.

Image processing for turbulence compensation

A method determining a retinal pigment epithelium identifies a plurality of regions using captured image data of the eye and fits a curve into at least some of the regions. A curve score is determined associated with the fitted curve using at least a distance between the fitted curve and at least some of the regions in which a contribution of the regions to the curve score is biased towards (asymmetric) regions below the fitted curve. These steps are repeated whereupon one of the fitted curves is selected, using the corresponding associated curve score, for classifying some of the regions as forming at least a part of a retinal pigment epithelium.

A method for determining a phase for a captured image, the method comprising forming a demodulated image defining wrapped phase values and modulation values, each being associated with at least one region in the captured image; identifying a position of an edge in the captured image dependent upon the modulation values; determining a position of substantial change in the wrapped phase values in the captured image dependent upon the identified position of the edge, and determining at least one unwrapped phase value based on the position of the edge and the position of the substantial change in the wrapped phase values by shifting a position of the substantial change in the wrapped phase values to the identified position of the edge, so that said unwrapped phase value is adjusted by at least one cycle.
