One embodiment provides an optical spectrometer. The optical spectrometer can include a lens-and-filter system configured to collect light scattered from a sample, a spot converter configured to convert a substantially circular beam outputted from the lens-and-filter system into a substantially rectangular beam, and a slit comprising a rectangular aperture to allow a predetermined portion of the substantially rectangular beam to enter the rectangular aperture while blocking noise. The slit can further include at least one microelectromechanical systems (MEMS)-based movable structure configured to adjust a width of the rectangular aperture.

Optical spectrometer with high-efficiency optical coupling

An apparatus includes a housing and a chamber. The chamber is configured to hold analyte. The chamber includes a reflective element, either a reflective coated layer or a reflective mirror, to return optical signals entering the analyte. A window is coated with an anti-reflective material or has negligible optical interference. A cap seals the chamber and the housing. A flow channel is provided within the housing and the chamber assembly to allow the analyte to flow through with reduced bubble entrapment as the cap is tightened to seal the chamber assembly.

Cartridges for liquid samples

A compact spectrometer includes an excitation light source configured to generate excitation light and arranged to illuminate a spot on a sample. A dispersive element includes at least one movable component and spatially separates output light emanating from the sample in response to the excitation light into a plurality of different wavelength bands. A moveable component of the dispersive element causes the plurality of different wavelength bands of the output light to be scanned across a detector. The detector includes at least one light sensor that senses the wavelength bands of the output light and generates an output electrical signal in response to the sensed output light.

Compact spectrometer

An optical window for an imaging system such as a Raman spectrometer, NIR spectrometer, fluorometer, or hyperspectral camera is configured to contact the subject. It includes: a substrate; and a flexible medium, where the flexible medium is configured to be deformed with substantially the same profile as that of the outer surface of the subject. The refractive index of the flexible medium and substrate is selected such that light collection efficiency and/or imaging quality returned to the measurement system increases after application of the optical window.

A WDDM includes a base substrate; a first mirror on the base substrate; a second mirror on said base substrate; a third mirror on the base substrate; a first optical splitter on the base substrate, wherein the first mirror is configured to reflect a first light beam to the first optical splitter, wherein the first optical splitter is configured to split the first light beam into a second light beam exiting from a first light exit surface of the first optical splitter and a third light beam reflecting to the second mirror; and a second optical splitter on the base substrate, wherein the second mirror is configured to reflect the third light beam to the second optical splitter, wherein the second optical splitter is configured to split the third light beam into a fourth light beam exiting from a second light exit surface of the second optical splitter and a fifth light beam reflecting to the third mirror.

Wavelength-division multiplexer (WDM) and de-multiplexer (WDDM)

Described are tunable multiport optical filters that filter systems with many optical channels in a convenient and cost-effective manner. The tunable multiport optical filters of the invention are simple in design and have few optical components. The basic elements are a dispersion element and a rotating mirror. With properly arranged arrays of input and output optical fibers, individual wavelength components from a selected input beam are spatially separated and steered by the rotating mirror to selected output locations. The optical properties from the selected components may be measured by one or more photodetectors. The filters are also useful for selecting and routing optical signals.

Tunable optical filters with multiple ports

An etalon has an effective cavity length that can be tuned to compensate for temperature-dependent frequency shift and/or for random variations in the manufacturing process. The effective cavity length of an etalon is adjusted by changing the orientation of a tuning plate positioned in the etalon cavity. A screw adjustment and bending beam spring are used to change tuning plate orientation and precisely tune the etalon resonance frequency after the manufacturing process has been completed. Orientation of the tuning plate is adjusted during operation of the etalon using a passive thermal compensation mechanism, such as a bimetal support arm, which is fixed to the tuning plate and configured to reposition the tuning plate with changing temperature.

Etalon with temperature-compensation and fine-tuning adjustment

An LC-based optical device compensates for differences in optical path lengths of polarization components of input beam. As a result, PDL and PMD of the optical device are reduced. The compensation mechanism may be a glass plate that is disposed in an optical path of a polarization component so that the optical path length of that polarization component can be made substantially equal to the optical path length of the other polarization component that traverses through a half-wave plate. Another compensation mechanism is a birefringent displacer that has two sections sandwiching a half-wave plate, wherein the two sections are of different widths and the planar front surface of the birefringent displacer can be positioned to be non-orthogonal with respect to the incident input light beam.

Liquid crystal optical device configured to reduce polarization dependent loss and polarization mode dispersion

Delay line interferometer designs using combinations of basic optical components that are expected to simplify manufacture and reduce costs while still providing precision optical performance. The main operative components of these designs are polarization beam splitters, birefringent crystals, optical delay components, and waveplates. Temperature controllers may be provided for adjusting the delay of the optical delay components.

Optical delay line interferometers with silicon dual mirror for DPSK

A delay line interferometer is configured with a liquid-crystal (LC) tuning element as a phase modulator for demodulating a phase-modulated input signal. The LC tuning element allows for quickly tuning the phase difference between two optical signals separated from the phase-modulated input signal, so that the two optical signals can be coherently recombined to interfere with each other and produce one or more intensity-modulated optical signals. In some embodiments, the LC tuning element is configured to reduce polarization-dependent frequency shift without the use of additional high-precision optical elements and/or coatings.

Delay line interferometer with liquid crystal tuning element

An optical device has the structure to perform switching and attenuation of an optical beam with reduced polarization dependent loss (PDL). The optical device includes a birefringent displacer and two liquid crystal (LC) structures. The first LC structure is used to condition s-polarized components of the optical beam and the second LC structure is used to condition p-polarized components of the optical beam. Each LC structure has a separate control electrode so that the s-polarized components of the optical beam and the p-polarized components of the optical beam can be conditioned differently and in such a manner that reduces PDL. The optical device may be configured for processing multiple input light beams, such as the multiple wavelength channels de-multiplexed from a wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) optical signal.
