A circular polarizer comprising a single linear polarizer producing a linear state of polarization and at least one phase retardation film layered with the single linear polarizer. In a first embodiment, the at least one phase retardation film includes at least one uniaxial A-plate phase retardation film and at least one uniaxial C-plate phase retardation film. In a second embodiment of the invention, the circular polarizer includes a linear polarizer and at least one biaxial phase retardation film layered with the linear polarizer. In another example of the circular polarize of the second embodiment, at least one uniaxial A-plate phase retardation film and/or at least one uniaxial C-plate phase retardation film is also layer with the linear polarize and the biaxial phase retardation film.

Wide-acceptance-angle circular polarizers

A transflective display includes pixels each including a reflective (R) sub-pixel, a transmissive (T) sub-pixel, and electrodes having features to cause multiple domains to form in a liquid crystal layer of the R sub-pixel and the T sub-pixel. The electrodes in the R sub-pixels have features that are different from features of the electrodes in the T sub-pixel to cause the liquid crystal layer in the R sub-pixel to have an optical phase retardation that is between 20% to 80% of an optical phase retardation of the liquid crystal layer in the T sub-pixel. The R sub-pixel and the T sub-pixel have substantially the same cell gap and are driven by the same pixel voltage.

Transflective liquid crystal display

Structures, devices, systems and methods of using multi-domain vertical alignment liquid crystal displays with high transmittance, high contrast ratio and wide view angle in which at least one of the electrode substrates has circular or ring-shaped openings, such as holes or slits. Circular or ring-shaped patterns for openings and electrodes have not been used in the construction of a liquid crystal display. The new multi-domain vertical alignment (MDVA) liquid crystal display is particularly suitable for liquid crystal display television and computer monitor applications.

Vertical alignment liquid crystal display with high transmittance and wide view angle

A transflective display includes pixels each including a first electrode, a second electrode, a liquid crystal layer associated with the first and second electrodes, and a conductive reflective layer between the liquid crystal layer and the second electrode to reflect ambient light. The conductive reflective layer is insulated from the second electrode and covers less than all of the second electrode to allow backlight to be transmitted through a portion of the pixel not covered by the conductive reflective layer.

Systems, methods, apparatus and devices for head mounted stereoscopic 3-D display devices using the tunable focus liquid crystal micro-lens array eye to produce eye accommodation information. A liquid crystal display panel displays stereoscopic images and uses tunable liquid crystal micro-lens array to change the diopter of the display pixels to provide eye accommodation information. The head mounted display device includes a planar display screen, planar tunable liquid crystal micro-lens array and planar black mask. The display device may optionally include a bias lens. In an embodiment, the display device also includes a backlight and a prism sheet for displaying the images on the display screen. The display screen, tunable liquid crystal micro-lens array, black mask and optional backlight and prism may be flat or curved.

Methods, systems and apparatus for a liquid crystal display panel having a first substrate with a color filter, an over-coating and a common electrode. The second substrate includes an insulating layer surface facing the first substrate, a pixel electrode, a plurality of common and pixel domain guides formed on the common and the pixel electrodes, a plurality of electric shields on one of the common or pixel electrodes and a liquid crystal layer vertically aligned between the first and second substrates. The panel also includes a drive circuit for applying a voltage to generate an electric field to control liquid crystal molecule orientation corresponding to the plurality of domain guides and electric shields to form a multi-domain liquid crystal display panel device. The plural domain guides are either protrusions or slits formed in the common electrode and the pixel electrode to form the multi-domain vertical alignment liquid crystal device.

Multi-domain vertical alignment liquid crystal displays with improved angular dependent gamma curves

A multi-domain in-plane-switching liquid crystal display with small color shift, wide viewing angle and fast response. The structure of the multi-domain in-plane switching liquid crystal displays comprises plural chevron-shaped common electrodes and chevron-shaped pixel electrodes, arranged alternatingly to form a multi-domain liquid crystal distributions. In an embodiment the structure includes a polarizer and an analyzer and the liquid crystal material is homogenously aligned. In another embodiment the structure includes alignment films for vertically aligning the liquid crystal material and crossed linear polarizers, circular polarizers or a combination of linear polarizers and compensation film. In another embodiment, the multi-domain in-plane switching liquid crystal display provides at least two different uniformly aligned liquid crystal domains, for a double multi-domain-In-plane switching LC display.

Vertical alignment liquid crystal displays with high transmittance and wide view angle

A representative device comprises a plurality of pixel units configured for use in a vertical alignment liquid crystal display, wherein a first of the pixel units comprises a first substrate, a second substrate and liquid crystal material. The first substrate comprises a pixel layer thereon, wherein the pixel layer comprises a thin film transistor and a pixel electrode, and the pixel electrode in the first of the pixel units has first openings therein. The second substrate comprises a common electrode thereon, wherein the common electrode has second openings therein, and the second openings and the first openings are arranged in an overlying and cross-over relationship with respect to each other. The liquid crystal layer is between the first and second substrates.

Vertical alignment liquid crystal displays

Structures, devices, systems and methods of using fringe field switching mode liquid crystal display (LCD) in which the electrodes have a trapezoidal structure. The disclosed fringe field switching mode LCD includes common electrodes and pixel electrodes arranged on a back substrate to produce a fringe field. Each electrode is comprised of alternating sections of main bone and trapezoidal electrode.

Fringe field switching liquid crystal displays using trapezoid electrodes

An electrode array structure in a pixel area of a fringe field switching mode LCD (FFS-LCD). A comb-shaped common electrode includes a first bar extending in a first direction and a plurality of first teeth extending in a second direction from the first bar, wherein each first tooth comprises a first bone having a plurality of discontinuous first trapezoidal protrusions on each side thereof. A comb-shaped pixel electrode comprises a second bar extending in the first direction and a plurality of second teeth extending in the second direction from the second bar, wherein each second tooth comprises a second bone having a plurality of discontinuous second trapezoidal protrusions on each side thereof.

Electrode array structures of fringe fields switching mode LCDs

A novel vertical alignment liquid crystal display with a structure having a flower-shaped vertical alignment (FVA) has the properties of fast response, high contrast ratio and a wide view angle. The method for making the device and structure of the FVA comprises the arrangement of: a first substrate with a protrusion shaped electrode as the pixel electrode; and a second substrate as the common electrode; aligning layers formed on said first and second substrates providing liquid crystal vertical alignment; liquid crystal materials filling a space between said first and second substrates as a liquid crystal cell; a linear polarizer and wide band quarter-wave film forming a circular polarizer; and, said circular polarizer disposed on exterior surfaces of said liquid crystal cell. When voltage is applied to the device, the liquid crystal (LC) director distribution looks like a flower blossom.

Flower-shaped vertical alignment liquid crystal displays with wide view angle and fast response time

Transmissive liquid crystal displays having response time that can be approximately 2 to approximately 3 times faster than conventional displays. The displays adjust the rubbing angles to above approximately 20 degrees and preferably between approximately 30 and approximately 40 degrees. The displays have fast response times, enhanced brightness and increased gray scale linearity while maintaining wide viewing angle.
