The present application provides switchable, homogeneous paint composition and methods of painting and/or forming films or coatings using the composition. The composition includes a liquid having an aqueous solution and dissolved acid gas (e.g., carbonated water), and a switchable polymer. The switchable polymer converts from a protonated, water-soluble form in the liquid to a water-insoluble unprotonated form following removal or substantial removal of the liquid and acid gas.

Switchable water-based paint or coating compositions

Methods and systems for use of switchable water, which is capable of reversibly switching between an initial ionic strength and an increased ionic strength, is described. The disclosed methods and systems can be used, for example, in distillation-free removal of water from solvents, solutes, or solutions, desalination, clay settling, viscosity switching, etc. Switching from lower to higher ionic strength is readily achieved using low energy methods such as bubbling with C0, CSor COS or treatment with Bronsted acids. Switching from higher to lower ionic strength is readily achieved using low energy methods such as bubbling with air, inert gas, heating, agitating, introducing a vacuum or partial vacuum, or any combination or thereof.

Systems and methods for use of water with switchable ionic strength

The present application provides a composite material that comprises a solid and solid-supported non-polymeric switchable moiety, wherein the switchable moiety comprises a functional group that is switchable between a first form and a second form, said first form being neutral and hydrophobic, and said second form being ionized and hydrophilic. The composite material converts to, or is maintained in, said second form when the switchable moiety is exposed to COat amounts sufficient to maintain the ionized form. The composite material converts to, or is maintained in, said first form when COis removed or reduced to an amount insufficient to maintain the ionized form. COis removed or reduced by exposing the composite material to heat and/or a flushing inert gas such as N, Ar, or air. Envisioned uses of these composite materials includes removing water from non-aqueous solvents, removing water vapor from gaseous mixtures, and cleaning industrial reaction vessels and/or pipelines.

Switchable materials, methods and uses thereof

The present application provides a polymer composite comprising at least one polymer and a reclaimed pyrolyzed carbon black (pCB), wherein the pCB comprises less than about 10 &#x3bc;g/g of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). Also provided are polymer composite and consumer-ready formulations of the low PAH pCB and methods of manufacturing such composites and formulations.

Pyrolytic carbon black and polymer composites manufactured therefrom

The invention relates to a latex composition wherein the latex composition comprises a butyl ionomer or partially halogenated butyl rubber ionomer. The latex composition is formed by dissolving the butyl ionomer in a suitable solvent, emulsifying the polymer in the solvent, adding water and optionally a minor amount of a suitable surfactant system to the emulsion and concentrating the emulsion to remove the water. The advantages of butyl ionomer latex include lower emulsifier levels, increased latex stability, improved interaction and adhesion to polar substrates and surfaces. Through the judicious choice of emulsifiers and/or washing to remove excess emulsifier a film with enhanced non-extractable polymeric antimicrobial function can be created. These properties of ionomer latex are useful in coatings, dipped goods and sponge applications.

Butyl ionomer latex

The invention relates to the use of butyl ionomers or partially halogenated butyl ionomers in reducing a population of and/or preventing accumulation of organisms. The organisms may be bacteria, algae, fungi, mollusca or arthropoda. The invention also relates to coatings for shaped articles comprising the butyl ionomers.

Butyl ionomers for use in reducing a population of and/or preventing accumulation of organisms and coatings made therefrom

A solvent that reversibly converts from a hydrophobic liquid form to hydrophilic liquid form upon contact with water and a selected trigger, e.g., contact with CO, is described. The hydrophilic liquid form is readily converted back to the hydrophobic liquid form and water. The hydrophobic liquid is an amidine or amine. The hydrophilic liquid form comprises an amidinium salt or an ammonium salt.

Switchable hydrophilicity solvents and methods of use thereof

The present invention relates to the modification of butyl elastomers, particularly halobutyl elastomers, under solvent free conditions with a phase transfer catalyst in the presence of an alkyl metal salt of an oxygen or sulfur-based nucleophile.

Halobutyl elastomers

The present invention provides compositions containing halobutyl elastomers, at least one mineral filler and at least one oligomeric polyol compound or mixture of at least one oligomeric polyol compound and an additive which contains at least one hydroxyl group and at least one functional group having a basic amine group. The present invention also provides a process for preparing silica reinforced elastomer compounds with improved scorch safety including admixing halobutyl elastomers, at least one silica mineral filler and at least one oligomeric polyol compound or mixture of at least one oligomeric polyol compound and an additive which contains at least one hydroxyl group and at least one functional group having a basic amine group and curing the resulting filled halobutyl elastomer mixture.

Silica-filled elastomeric compounds

The invention relates to nanocomposites and processes for making nanocomposites comprising butyl rubber ionomers having at least 3.5 mol % of repeating units derived from a multiolefin monomer, such as isoprene. More particularly, the invention relates to butyl rubber ionomer nanocomposites comprising high aspect ratio fillers. In one preferred aspect of the invention, the nanocomposites comprise ionomers that are generated in situ during formation of the nanocomposite, leading to intercalation of the ionomer with the nanocomposite. Nanocomposites according to the present invention exhibit improved impermeability and tensile properties as compared with prior art nanocomposites made using conventional brominated butyl rubber.

Butyl rubber ionomer nanocomposites

The present invention provides a composition comprising at least one halobutyl elastomer, at least one mineral filler and at least one protected thiol modifier. In another aspect the present invention provides a process which comprises mixing a halobutyl elastomer with at least one mineral filler, in the presence of at least one protected thiol modifier, and curing the resulting filled halobutyl elastomer.

The present invention relates to silica-filled halogenated butyl elastomers, such as bromobutyl elastomers (BIIR). Further, the present invention also relates to bromobutyl elastomers with improved scorch safety.

A butyl rubber ionomer having improved adhesion to substrates whose surfaces have polar functional groups. Examples of such substrate materials include stainless steel, glass, mylar or Teflon&#xae;. The adhesion of the butyl rubber ionomer to the substrate is at least 25% greater than the adhesion of a non-ionomeric butyl rubber to the same substrate surface and with certain substrates is more than 150% greater. The adhesion is improved with increasing levels of multiolefin content in the butyl rubber ionomer. The adhesion is greatest for butyl rubber ionomers having a high multiolefin content (at least 3.5 mol% of multiolefin monomers or at least 1.5 mol % of residual multiolefins). By taking advantage of these high adhesion levels, a composite article can be formed between the butyl rubber ionomer and the substrate.
