A smoking article includes a tobacco rod in axial alignment with a filter section with a catalyst bed disposed between the tobacco rod and the filter section. The catalyst bed may be heated from an external portable heating source or may be heated by the internal evolving gases of combustion of the tobacco.

Smoking article including a catalytic smoke reformer

A non-burning cigarette holder is comprised of an upstream cylindrical section of a low heat conducting material and a downstream cylindrical section of a relatively high heat conducting material. The upstream cylindrical section has a first upstream chamber for receiving a fuel source and a second downstream chamber defining a fuel mixture chamber which is in flow communication with the first upstream chamber. The downstream cylindrical section is provided with a flame holder downstream of the chamber and a flame chamber is disposed between the flame holder and a cigarette receiving chamber adapted to receive a tobacco rod or a cigarette. The fuel source may be an ethanol-water mixture disposed within the upstream cylindrical section or the fuel source may be attached to the upstream end of the upstream cylindrical section.

This invention relates to a process of exploding tobacco stems to improve smoke quality, and more particularly to a process of exploding the cells of tobacco stems with high pressure saturated steam, followed by rapid depressurization and quenching, in order to reduce negative contributors to smoke quality and to form favorable flavor compounds.

A non-combustible simulated cigarette inhaler device includes a hollow cylindrical tube having an open air inlet end and an opposed open air outlet end to be placed in the mouth of a user. A first element of air permeable material is located within the hollow tube across a segment of the transverse cross-sectional area of the tube and a second element of air permeable material is located within the hollow tube across the remaining segment of the transverse cross-section of the tube. The first element is impregnated with a nicotine free base material. The second element is impregnated with an acid which is reactive with the free base to form a salt having a pH in the range of approximately 5 to 7. Examples of such acids are 2-butenoic acid, 2-methyl-2-butenoic acid, isocaproic, caproic, and caprylic acids.
