Air-time fair transmission regulation without explicit traffic specifications for wireless networks

When handing off a multi-mode patient monitoring device (PMD) () between radio access technology (RAT) networks, a serving access point (AP) () with which a communication link is established by the PMD () over a first RAT network (RAT-) to permit the PMD to communicate with a hospital IP network () via the serving AP (). A scanning interface () collects information regarding other available RAT networks (e.g., RAT-, RAT-, etc) and candidate APs therein. If the RAT-communication quality of service falls below a predetermined threshold level, the serving AP () delivers information regarding the candidate APs () and their RAT networks to the PMD (). Delivery of the candidate network/AP information is performed using a beacon signal continuously or periodically emitted from the serving AP (), or upon request by the PMD (). The PMD () selects a candidate AP () as a target AP, and initiates a handover to the target AP. In this manner, the PMD () is provided with candidate AP information without having to actively search for the APs, thereby conserving battery power.

Method for fast link layer handoff in heterogeneous networks

A patient monitor includes least one monitoring device which collects patient data about a patient. A packet generator generates data packets from the patient data collected from the patient. A communication unit transmits the data packets over an Internet protocol (IP) network. In a wireless communication channel, the time per a service interval is distributed among multiple data services. The data services have been allocated airtime quotas in order to comply with their QoS requirements. These airtime quotas are scaled by a factor that is the ratio between, on the one hand, the time available per service interval for accommodating data of these services and, on the other hand, the total of the airtime quotas. This allows the services to use more airtime in case not the entire service interval has been allocated.
