An optical property of a device under test is determined from a detected DUT response signal, or a signal derived therefrom, whereby the DUT response signal represents a signal response of the DUT in response to a composite signal or a signal derived from said composite signal. The composite signal comprises superimposed signals delayed with respect to each other.

Determining an optical property by using superimposed delayed signals

For determining a signal response characteristic of a device, a first signal is varied with a first function of time and simultaneously a second signal is varied with a second function of time, wherein the first function is different from the second function. The first and second signals are coupled to the device, wherein the device is exposed to a time-dependent disturbance signal. A signal response is received from the device in response to the first and second signals and the time-dependent disturbance signal. The signal response characteristic is derived by analyzing the received signal response in conjunction with the first and second signals, or a signal derived therefrom, and at least partially removing the time-dependent disturbance signal using the received signal response and the first and second signals, or a signal derived therefrom.

Determination of a device signal response characteristic using multiple varied signals

An attenuating device for attenuating optical power of a light beam, comprises an at least partly absorbing element adapted to receive and attenuate the optical power of the light beam, and a supporting element for supporting on at least one side the at least partly absorbing element. The at least partly absorbing element comprises at least one layer coated or evaporated on the supporting element with an increasing, decreasing, or varying thickness. The supporting element is provided with a material having a crystalline structure to provide compensation to a local heating in the at least partly absorbing element resulting from absorption of the light beam.

Optical attenuator with heat compensation

The invention relates to an optical device comprising an emitting source and a partly-reflective element which is adapted for receiving an emitted light beam. This element is tilted in a small angle with respect to the emitted light beam. A portion of the emitted light beam is reflected by the partly-reflective element towards a transmittive element which is arranged in close proximity to the emitting source and adapted to receive and transmit the reflect portion. The transmittive element is arranged for at least partly fixing or positioning an optical fiber, which is emitting the input light beam, and provided for transmitting the laterally offset reflected portion of the input light beam away from the input fiber.

Return loss reduction

An optical attenuator for attenuating an incident optical beam comprises at least two attenuating devices, each having a polarization dependent attenuation characteristic with a preferred orientation. The attenuating devices are arranged in the optical beam in a way that the preferred orientations of the polarization dependent attenuation characteristics substantially compensate each other, at least partially in defined locations. At least one attenuating device provides an attenuation characteristic wherein the attenuation for the incoming light beam varies in a defined direction. The preferred orientation of the polarization dependent attenuation characteristic of the at least one attenuating device is substantially in the same direction as the varying attenuation characteristics or substantially perpendicular thereto.
