The optical diffuser has a transparent base body with a base body surface, which is divided into facets. Each facet has an elevation or a depression correlated or associated with a second curved surface. Respective facets have correspondingly different geometrical shapes. In some embodiments the respective apexes (S) of the elevations or depressions are arranged along a spiral, especially an Archimedean spiral. In other embodiments the apexes (S) are defined by coordinates (x', y&#x2032;) derived by rotation of coordinates (x, y) of all points (P), which are defined by an arrangement of facets with regular hexagonal edge contours, about a center (0, 0) through a twist angle (&#x3b4;). Alternatively the apexes (S) are defined by coordinates (x&#x2033;, y&#x2033;) derived from coordinates (x, y) of all points (P), which are defined by the arrangement of facets with regular hexagonal edge contours, by random variations with the help of a Monte Carlo method. The optical diffuser according to the invention produces a circular soft-edged light field, which is outstanding for photographic applications.

The invention comprises an optical arrangement for illumination purposes, in particular for a stepped lens spotlight, comprising a stepped lens with a light-diffusing element, in particular a diffusing screen, in which the diffusing screen is arranged in a first region and the stepped lens is arranged in a second region, and in which, with the change in the shape of the light impinging on the optical arrangement and/or the size of the light illuminating the optical arrangement, it is possible to set the aperture angle of the light emerging from the optical arrangement, in particular between two limit values, a smaller &#x3b1;and a larger &#x3b1;.

The optical system for the Fresnel lens light has an ellipsoidal reflector (), a light source () and a Fresnel lens (). The distance (a) between the Fresnel lens () and the reflector () is changeable but is related to the changeable distance (b) between the light source () and the reflector () so that the aperture angle of the propagated light beam is variable but illumination intensity of the propagated light is maintained uniform. Surfaces of the at least one Fresnel lens and/or the reflector can be structured to provide more uniform illumination of a given area. The optical system is useful for lights for film, stage, studio and photography.
