A method for producing esters of hydroxy terminated polybutadiene, including the steps of: (a) providing an anhydride; (b) reacting a hydroxy terminated polybutadiene with the anhydride to form a carboxyl terminated polybutadiene derivative; (c) reacting the derivative with an epoxide. Also a curable composition, including: (a) an ester of hydroxy terminated polybutadiene; (b) a copolymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer; and (c) a drier.

Radiation and peroxide-curable oligomeric emulsions are prepared by mixing water, an .alpha.,.beta.-ethylenically unsaturated oligomer (e.g. an unsaturated polyester), a reactive, nonionic surfactant containing allyl unsaturation, and a metallic salt drier under high shear agitation until a stable emulsion is formed. Coatings prepared from these emulsions are tack and mar free and demonstrate good resistance to organic solvents and water.

Method of preparing superior scratch resistant coatings which are particularly well suited for use in combination with unsaturated polyester gel coats in applications where a smooth, high gloss, durable, scratch resistant surface is desirable, such as in marine and cultured marble applications, include compositions comprising at least one polyfunctional monomer having 3 or more acryloloxy groups per molecule, preferably 5 or more acryloloxy groups, and either at least one N-vinyl imido group containing monomer or at least one polyallylglycidyl ether containing compound. These coating compositions are cured either by exposure to ultraviolet radiation or by thermal means, preferably using organic peroxides.

A scratch resistant coating for peroxide curable urethane elastomers comprises a radiation curable composition including at least one polyfunctional monomer having three or more acryloloxy groups per molecule, preferably five or more acryloloxy groups per molecule, and at least one N-vinyl imido group containing monomers. The coating is applied to at least one mold surface and the mold is closed for receiving the urethane elastomer. Following curing of the urethane elastomer, a coated, molded product is obtained which has improved scratch and solvent resistant properties on the surface or surfaces of the mold to which the in-mold coating was applied. The coating composition in combination with the elastomer, and the method disclosed in the present invention are especially well suited for coating plastic, optically clear lenses, i.e., those to be used in eye glasses.

Dual cure coating compositions are prepared by one of the following techniques: aminoplast crosslinking with residual hydroxy present on extended acrylated or UV cure polymers; oxidative crosslinking of backbone drying oil unsaturation following UV cure; or by employing UV chain extension via reaction of pendent allylic group with polymercaptans followed by a melamine heat cure. The coatings are cured by UV exposure followed by heating or air drying.

A film-forming polymerizable resin is produced from combining acrylic acid, the diglycidyl ether of N-butyl diol and 3,3',4,4'-benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA). The diglycidyl ether of N-butyl diol is combined with BTDA and sufficient acrylic acid to combine with unreacted epoxide groups. The BTDA constitutes 2 to 10 percent by weight of the three ingredients. The ingredients are heated to a low acid number where the epoxy equivalent of the mixture is greater than 3,500. The resulting film-forming resin can be pigmented and can be cured in the presence of ultraviolet radiation.
