Memory management techniques that permit an executing process to store content in memory and later retrieve that content from the memory, but that also permit a memory manager to discard that content to address memory pressure. A process executing on a computing device may notify a memory manager of the computing device that first memory space allocated to the process contains first content that is available for discard. If the memory manager detects the computing device is experiencing memory pressure, the memory manager may address the memory pressure by selecting memory space available for discard and discarding the content of the memory space. Before a process reuses content made available for discard, the process may notify the memory manager of the intent to reuse and, in response, receive empty memory and an indication that the content was discarded or receive an indication that the content is still available for use.

Memory management techniques

A system and process for ensuring the smooth flow of electronic ink is described. Ink-stroke information associated with one or more data packets is received, and it is determined that the ink-stroke information comprises a gesture indication. The gesture indication is communicated to an ink collection object which causes the ink collection object to delete the ink stroke information.

A typical scenario may be where one it would be useful to mark up a document with electronic ink, such as by making handwritten comments, drawings, and the like over the underlying document. In some embodiments, a developer may easily define an inking surface, such as a transparent or opaque window, over a document. The inking surface may act as an input interface such that a user may write onto the inking surface such that is appears that the document itself is being marked up.

Stylus 'focus' designates or establishes an element or area of a computer interface to receive input (e.g., such as electronic ink). Focus may be used, for example, to prepare the associated element to receive input by 'waking' the system from a &#x201c;stand-by&#x201d; mode; by triggering increased digitizer polling frequency; by setting up data structures or allocating memory resources to receive input; retrieving data relating to the input or characteristics thereof, etc. Systems, methods, and computer-readable media for managing stylus focus may include: (a) receiving input indicating that a stylus is located proximate a digitizer; and (b) providing focus to a control element corresponding to the stylus location, e.g., when the stylus is located proximate to and/or in contact with the digitizer. If desired, stylus focus may be maintained separate from and/or concurrent with mouse and/or keyboard focus. Additionally, such systems and methods may accept input from multiple styli and independently and concurrently provide stylus focus with respect to control elements corresponding to the location of each stylus.
