A nail magazine for a power nailer is disclosed which includes an elongated housing formed from a pair of parallel side walls which have a plurality of opposed elongated channels formed therein cooperating to define a plurality of guide tracks which receive the heads of a strip of nails fitting between the side walls. The side walls have a discharge end from which nails in the strip are discharged. The nails are biased towards the discharge end of the strip by a spring pusher arrangement including a flat plate received between the side walls.

A staple gun tacker for driving staples of various leg lengths is disclosed in which the staple gun housing has a front staple gun driving end and a base. The base has a staple discharge opening formed therein through which staples to be driven by the staple gun are discharged into a workpiece. A staple spacer guide is slidably mounted on the staple driving end of the housing and includes a free end which extends beyond the staple discharge opening and the base of the staple gun. Cooperating means are provided on the spacer guide and the housing to enable the spacer guide to be retracted along the housing relative to the base, thereby to control the position of the staple discharge opening relative to the workpiece into which a staple is to be driven. By controlling the position of the staple driving end of the staple gun relative to the workpiece, the depth to which a particular staple is driven in the workpiece can be controlled to avoid damage to the item being stapled to the workpiece.

A staple driving system for driving insulated staples to secure an object to a base which includes staples having a generally U-shape including parallel legs with free end portions. A molded body formed of insulating material is located on the free end portions of each staple and is slidable with respect thereto when the staple is driven. The molded body has a generally semi-circular recess formed therein between the legs of the staple for surrounding and engaging a cable, wire, or the like. The molded insulating body of one staple is connected by frangible connections to an adjacent molded body of an adjacent staple so that the staples can be shipped and used in a strip. A staple gun having a magazine formed to receive and guide the insulated staples is also provided along with a pusher shaped to cooperate with guide ribs on the magazine while engaging the molded body and the bight of the last staple of a strip in the magazine to accurately guide the staples in the magazine during operation of the system.

A retractable tape measure is disclosed which includes a housing having an opening formed therein, a coiled tape rule within the housing and a free end extending through the opening. A coiled spring is provided to retract the tape rule into the casing and a lock assembly is provided to selectively lock the tape rule in an extended position and release it for retraction into the casing. The lock assembly includes an actuator member that is pivotally mounted on the casing for pivotable movement between a locking and an unlocking position and a tape locking blade having one end positioned to engage the tape and an other end defining a bearing surface, the tape locking blade being mounted in the casing for movement between locking and unlocking positions. A connecting link is provided which has one end located in bearing engagement with the bearing surface of the locking blade and an opposed end pivotally connected to the actuator member in a predetermined position to provide an over-the-center action to lock the blade in the locking position. The locking blade includes integrally formed spring arms engaged with the casing for applying a biasing force to the locking blade to urge the locking blade against the locking action of the actuator member and thereby move the locking blade to the unlocked position when the actuator member is moved to its unlocked position.

A device for heating a substantially solid glue stick or the like includes a heating chamber housing having a heating chamber formed therein and a separate elongated passage including a first open end for receiving a substantially solid glue stick, and a second opposed open end defining an exit opening for melted glue. The heating chamber has an open side and a positive temperature coefficient resistant cartridge positioned in the chamber for heating the housing adjacent to the passage to a temperature sufficient to soften a glue stick therein. A cam structure is located in the chamber engaged with the cartridge adjacent the open side of the chamber and a spring is mounted on the housing in engagement with the cam structure for urging the cam into engagement with the cartridge thereby to accommodate expansion and contraction of the cartridge during operation of the device.

A combination lock has a pivoting bolt for engaging and disengaging a hasp. The hasp, which is disengaged from the bolt when the lock is on-combination, may be re-engaged with the bolt, even if the lock is off-combination. A first spring resiliently biases the bolt to an unlocked position. A second spring resiliently restrains movement of the bolt beyond a locked position in order to prevent disengagement of the hasp in response to application of a shock force to the lock.

The tool has a solenoid, a olenoid plunger and a staple driving knife which is mounted generally parallel to the axis of the solenoid, but outboard of it near the front of the housing. The staple driving knife is connected to the solenoid plunger by means of an overhung transverse drive beam which is connected at its forward end to the upper part of the knife and at its rearward end to the top of the plunger. The tool further has a siamese twin housing which has a live hinge at its front end. The tool has an extended staple driving chute to permit driving staples into small recesses. The tool further has a combination mounting and grounding device using only a single screw. A staple driving tool is also provided which has a staple driving knife centrally aligned with the solenoid plunger and connected to it by means of arcuate wings on the upper end of the knife press fitted around an attachment rod at the bottom end of the plunger.

A glue gun having an advancing mechanism which has a longitudinally slidable carriage member with a longitudinal opening for the glue stick is provided. The carriage member has a first transverse opening in communication with the longitudinal opening and a second transverse opening in communication with the first transverse opening which is also transvers to the first transverse opening. The first transverse opening has internal peripheral bearing surfaces. A substantially T-shaped angularly displaceable gripper member is included which has an upper member defining a gripper head and a lower member defining a transverse lever. The gripper head is receivable into the first transverse opening and has a front end, a rear end, an upper end and a gripper tooth near its front and upper ends for gripping the glue stick. The gripper head further has exterior peripheral bearing surfaces near its front and rear ends which slidably bear against the internal peripheral bearing surfaces of the first transverse opening to retain the gripper head in the first transverse opening while permitting angular displacement of the head.

An attachment for a staple gun tacker having a staple driving blade is disclosed which is adapted to be used in driving and setting a rivet of the type having a pin member mounted in a headed rivet shank having an expandable workpiece piercing free end. The attachment includes a housing adapted to be frictionally engaged on the working end of a staple gun tacker and having a bore located to be generally in axial alignment with the driving blade of the staple gun tacker. A hollow flanged bushing is slidably mounted in the housing bore with a spring for biasing the bushing away from the housing to engage the shoulder of the interior of the housing and to permit retraction of the bushing into the housing against the bias of the spring. A pin punch which is axially free floating within its operative range of movement is slidably mounted in the bushing for axial movement therein. The pin punch is axially restrained to prevent the pin punch from exceeding its operative range and to prevent inadvertent removal of the pin punch from the attachment housing when the attachment is removed from the staple gun tacker. The bushing and the pin punch are positioned such that the pin punch is impacted by the driving blade of the staple gun tacker when it is operated to apply a driving force thereto, which force is used to drive the pin member of the rivet to expand the free end of the rivet.
