A reactor for carrying out exothermic and endothermic catalytic reactions includes a contact tube bundle and radial admission and removal of a heat transfer medium via an annular duct for each, and a circulation through an external heat exchanger. Two or more circulating pumps are connected to the annular ducts and are distributed over the circumference. The heat exchanger can be arranged in shunt to the main circulation and be connected with individual sections of at least one annular duct via setting elements.

Reactor construction

In a heat exchanger or similar apparatus using a tube bundle, the tubes are located within a jacket and are connected into a tube sheet. An annular reinforcing member secures the tube sheet to the jacket laterally enclosing the tube bundle. The reinforcing member consists of an inner part and an outer part which can be a unitary member or separate parts welded together. The outer part forms a continuation of the jacket and has a greater thickness than the jacket. The inner part extends radially outwardly from the circumferential periphery of the tube sheet to the outer part and has a frusto-conical shape extending outwardly from at least one of the face surfaces of the tube sheet transversely of its radial direction.

In large catalytic reaction apparatus where a fluid is catalytically treated as it flows through tubes, the apparatus is divided into a number of modular units which are assembled at a production location, shipped to a construction site and joined together to form the apparatus at the construction site. Each modular unit has a similar shape and has a sector-like shape in section extending transversely of the axial direction of the tubes. Each modular unit includes a plurality of tubes extending between a pair of sector-like shaped tube sheet sections with side walls laterally enclosing the tubes and forming, in combination with the tube sheet sections, a sealed modular unit which is capable of being tested at the production location before being shipped to the construction site.
