The terry fabric comprises a basic warp, weft threads and a pile warp or loop warp. The terry fabric is based on a float repeat or weft beat-up repeat, which includes a first and a second weft group. Whereas the first weft group in each case contains partially beaten up wefts, the second weft group contains in each case one fully beaten up weft or additionally a smooth weft.

Terry cloth is woven by determining the pile warp yarn consumption during partial and full beat-ups of the pile warp on the basis of reference pattern data established for the terry cloth that is to be woven and which is used to control the payout of pile warp several picks in advance of the pick when a given length of pile warp yarn is actually needed. A feed-back arrangement compares the required length of pile warp for any given beat-up with the length of pile warp actually paid out and makes adjustments to the pile warp payout mechanism to compensate for any differences between them. As the length of pile warp yarn between a supply thereof and the fell in the weaving machine varies, due to differences between the instantaneous rates of yarn payout and consumption and/or other factors, a compensating roller in engagement with the pile warp yarn keeps its tension constant to assure the weaving of correctly sized terry loops.

A method for weaving blemish-free smooth and terry fabric on a loom following a stoppage of the loom after it has woven a fabric fell which terminates in a last weft thread. The loom has a driven reed which reciprocates during normal weaving towards and away from the fell over a predetermined beat-up distance to successively position additional weft threads at predetermined target positions which assure a uniform, blemish-free fabric. Following a loom stoppage, the next weft yarn, for smooth fabric, and a plurality of next weft yarns, for terry fabric, are moved towards the last weft yarn over a compensated beat-up distance which is different from the predetermined beat-up distance to thereby position the next weft yarn at the desired target position relative to the least weft yarn of the fell to avoid the formation of fabric blemishes. Thereafter the reed is again moved over the predetermined beat-up distance during subsequent picks of the loom.

A rapier loom has rapier heads which are moved by picking tapes into an open shed. Spacing elements are provided for the rapiers to ensure that when the shed is fully opened, a space is present between the tape and the bottom shed to reduce frictional contact between the warp yarns and the picking tape edges when the shed closes. The spacing elements can be in the form of slidable members which are disposed on the underside of the rapier head and/or in the form on spacing teeth which are secured to the sley and which can enter the shed between the warp yarns of a bottom shed.

A tensioning device of a loom is embodied by a tensioning element rotatably mounted on a plurality of rollers which, in turn, are supported at spaced apart bearing places on a drive shaft. The drive shaft is biased by a torsion bar acted on its end by an adjusting mechanism driven by means of an eccentric. The tensioning device comprises a reduced number of parts of reduced dimension and can therefore adapt very rapidly to changes in the position of the warp yarns. The tensioning device is particularly suitable for high-speed looms which process delicate warp yarns.

To operate the terry loom, one or more pile-forming elements is actuated by separate drives on an individual pick basis and in a freely triggerable manner and at a loom speed. Any desired terry cadence can be produced in any desired sequence without stopping the loom and changing mechanical control and actuating means. Pile height can also be varied as required. The terry loom has at least one servomotor as a separate drive. The servomotor, which is triggered by means of a control and adjustment circuit arrangement, drives the pile-forming element by way of a reduction transmission and transmission elements. The servomotor can be preferably brushless and electronically commutated and have a low mass inertia rotor and high-field strength permanent magnets.

To operate the loom, one or more warp-tensioning elements is or are actuated by separate drives on an individual pick basis with free triggering and at loom speed. The warp tension can therefore be so modulated as to obviate deleterious tension peaks and warp breakages and overflow tensions. The loom has at least one servomotor. A servomotor, which is triggered by a control and adjustment circuit arrangement, drives the warp-tensioning element by way of a reduction transmission and transmission elements. The servomotor can be commutated preferably brushlessly and electronically and have a low mass inertia rotor and high-field-strength permanent magnets.

The weaving machine includes an electronic control device which can receive a signal for a reverse-motion of the pile warp let-off drive motor from the card dobby via a sensor when borders (plain woven regions) of the fabric are to be produced within the terrycloth material. When the drive motor briefly runs backward, the tension in the pile warp increases, which causes the plate warp tensioning beam to be shifted into the plain weaving position in which a pivoting lever rides up onto a leaf spring. The latter is shifted into the plain weaving position which causes the increased pile warp tension to be produced. If a terrycloth weaving operation is to be returned to, then the drive motor receives an appropriate signal from the card dobby for a brief fast forward motion of the pile warp beam, which causes a lower pile warp tension to be produced again while the pile warp tensioning beam pivots back into the normal position. In this manner particularly regular, loopless borders having sharp or defined edges can be obtained within the terrycloth fabric.

The taker-gripper has a longitudinally translatable clamping tongue with a clamping tongue head. The latter is pressed by a spring into a clamping hook having a first diagonally oriented or inclined clamping flank. The weft or filling thread is thereby firmly gripped and pulled through the weaving shed. The clamping hook has a further clamping flank oriented diagonally or at an inclination in reverse relation to the diagonal or inclined orientation of the first clamping flank. A correspondingly located inclined or diagonal flank of the clamping tongue head slidingly engages the further clamping flank of the clamping hook as the clamping tongue opens. As the parts of the gripper move into the open position, a pivoting motion of the clamping tongue about a pivot pin is generated by an eccentric engagement of a tension band at the clamping tongue in relation to the pivot pin. In this manner, the open position is rapidly attained and the gripped thread or yarn or the like is quickly released independently of its characteristics, e.g. thickness or texture. The projecting weft thread ends are thereby made shorter and more uniform.
