A stirring system for molten glass having a stirring vessel and a stirrer; and a method for homogenizing glass melts. The stirrer has a shaft and at least one stirring element, and the stirring vessel has at least two baffles extending from an inner circumferential surface. The stirring element and baffles are formed in such a way that insertion of the stirrer into the stirring vessel requires at least one translatory movement of the stirrer in relation to the stirring vessel, at least one subsequent or simultaneous relative rotation of the stirrer in relation to the stirring vessel, and a further translatory movement of the stirrer in relation to the stirring vessel. In an operating state, the stirrer is rotatable in the stirring vessel.

In some embodiments, the invention provides a refining chamber for glass production, made of platinum group metal materials, with improved refining effectiveness. The refining chamber according has the shape of a tube with a cross section (), with the cross section of the tube being shaped, in at least one segment, so that in the operating position the length () of a horizontal line () which divides the surface of the cross section into essentially a lower and an upper segment of the surface, both of which have essentially the same area, is greater than twice the maximum vertical extent () of the lower segment of the surface. The cross section of the refining chamber can, for example, have the shape of an oval, an ellipse, a slot, a rounded triangle or a polygon, and the stiffness of the shape of the refining chamber can be increased by forming radially peripheral creases, corners, waves or folds.

The present invention provides devices for glass melt devlivery and methods for using these devices. In these devices, a delivery nozzle comprising at least one platinum group metal material is directly heated by electricty. To facilitate heating, a cylindrical heating ring is mounted in ceramic base. The device's construction ensures a regulatable heating of the nozzle and the melted glass flux.

A process for the production of tubular structural parts fabricated from PGM materials and having circumferential undulating bulges by forming from smooth-walled tube pieces. A smooth-walled tube piece () is inserted into a cylindrical forming die () with an internal diameter that corresponds substantially to the external diameter of the tube piece and that has radial undulating recesses (). This die is provided at both axial ends with a press tool () that tightly seals the tube ends. A hot forming unit or debiteuse for plate glass production, with a noble metal box or frame encompassed by and contained in a highly heat-resistant ceramic frame and having a drawing slot matched to a cross section of a plate glass sheet to be produced. The dimensional integrity of the drawing slot of the noble metal frame is assured because the ceramic frame is constructed of longitudinal components and lateral components, where the longitudinal components of the ceramic frame and the longitudinal legs of the noble metal box rest against one another and are held so that they can still move axially against each other in a limited fashion. The longitudinal legs of the noble metal box are held in a stretched position by tension springs.
