A sabot body (4) is completely enclosed by the sabot casing (3) which partly also encloses the rear of the pointed projectile (1). The sabot body (4) has the shape of a one-part or multiple-part hollow body with circumferential grooves (5, 34), and an exterior diameter which is smaller than the diameter of the sabot casing. The sabot optimizes gas sealing, reduces weight, and reduces the risk posed by metal splinters.

Jettisonable sabot for a subcaliber projectile. In a jettisonable sabot for a subcaliber projectile, which is fired from a weapon barrel having helical grooves, there is a risk that individual segments of a sabot body, strike the projectile body with their edges during the separation from the projectile body, with these impacts against the projectile body impairing the impact accuracy. In order to avoid these impacts, the parting planes or slots between the individual segments of the sabot body are not arranged radially, as in the past, but rather parallel with radial planes with a specified distance (d) corresponding to at least half of the radius (R) of the projectile body, with the slits between the segments of the sabot jacket preferably being arranged parallel to radial planes with a specified distance (d).

In subcaliber projectiles at discharge, a sabot is located between the inner wall surface of the cannon and the fin-stabilized projectile, wherein the sabot, which in a known manner serves to increase the acceleration area, is comprised of a sabot body and a sabot jacket, wherein, in order that upon exit of the projectile from the weapon barrel, the sabot can readily detach itself from the subcaliber projectile, the sabot is segmented, with the contact areas between segments on one side and between the subcaliber projectile and segments on the other side leading to sealing problems, which are overcome, in accordance with this invention, via a special segmentation of the sabot body, with longitudinal slots which include at least, in part, a T-shaped cross section, and reference fracture locations in the region of its inner diameter as well as a gas-tight seal with a concave shaped forwardly-widening seal bonnet having a closing seal.

Increasingly greater requirements as concerns mechanical strength and gas tightness are placed upon the connection between the sabot tail or rear portion and the sabot jacket of a sabot projectile. To improve such connection the invention contemplates subdividing the prior conventional circumferential groove at the sabot tail or rear portion into a rear sealing groove and a front holding groove. In corresponding fashion the sabot jacket possesses a rear sealing lip or flange which protrudes into the rear sealing groove of the sabot tail or rear portion and a holder rib which protrudes into the front holding groove of the sabot tail or rear portion. According to a particular construction the rear sealing groove possesses mutually parallel side walls which are forwardly inclined with respect to the lengthwise axis of the projectile at an angle of about 75.degree..

In a sabot projectile the sabot must immediately detach from the projectile body upon exit of the projectile from the barrel muzzle of the firing weapon without the flight stability of the projectile body being impaired. For this purpose the sabot rear portion must fracture or break along the provided reference fracture locations. According to the invention the reference fracture locations are constructed such that the sabot positively fractures or breaks along the reference fracture locations. Hence, the heretofore conventional reference fracture locations are structured more reliably by the provision of one or more additional bores.

For the attachment of a flare composition sleeve in a bore at the tail of a projectile body it was heretofore necessary to maintain very exact fabrication tolerances in order to provide a reliable sealing action against the propellant gases. To avoid this drawback the invention contemplates, in a first method step, pressing the flare composition sleeve, with the aid of a pressing plug or pin, into the bore at the tail or rear portion of the projectile body and, during a second method step, a ring-shaped edge of the flare composition sleeve is enlarged by means of an elastically deformable, such as a plastic or rubber plug until the ring-shaped edge bears against a ring-shaped groove of the bore wall of the projectile body. The flare composition sleeve possesses at the aforementioned end confronting the projectile body a smaller or at most the same wall thickness as at the remaining region.

A spinning projectile fuze contains a rotor which is retained by a safety spring in the form of a substantially ring-shaped disk in a safety or unarmed position. To enable the ring-shaped disk to release the rotor it must be pressed flat both by the firing acceleration and also by the spin. This ring-shaped disk possesses cut-outs or recesses by means of which it is subdivided into segments which are bent in an undulated or wave-shaped configuration.
