A shut-off valve, particularly for use in a pipeline for conveying gases, includes a valve casing, a valve member mounted for movement between a valve open position and a valve closed position, and a casing seal mounted on at least one of the valve casing and the valve member for forming a seal with a sealing surface at least when the valve member is in the valve closed position. The casing seal includes a frame member having two legs extending in a direction toward the position of the sealing surface when the seal is formed. The two legs are spaced and define therebetween an open channel. The casing seal further includes a seal member formed from a substantially flat elastic strip which is deformed to include two leg portions which are positioned between and freely and elastically urged toward respective inner surfaces of the legs of the frame member and a bent portion which connects the two leg portions and which projects outwardly of the channel for sealing contact with the sealing surface.

A ceramic burner includes a fuel gas supply conduit having a gas delivery region opening into a mouth portion and a mixing and aspiration region communicating with the gas delivery region, and an air supply conduit having nozzles opening into the mixing and aspiration region of the fuel gas supply conduit. The mixing and aspiration region has an angular configuration including a first segment inclined with respect to the axis of a combustion chamber of an air heater within which the burner is positioned and a second segment inclined with respect to the first segment and in communication therewith at a position of directional change. The gas delivery region extends coaxially with respect to the combustion chamber. The nozzles of the air supply conduit include first and second sets of nozzles, the first set of nozzles being directed toward an opposite wall of the first segment of the mixing and aspiration region adjacent the position of directional change, and the second set of nozzles being directed toward the mouth portion. The gas delivery region has extending thereinto, at positions adjacent the mouth portion, a plurality of projections.

Ceramic burner for use in an air heater

A gate valve includes a water cooled valve casing coaxially attachable to a conduit and a valve plate mounted in the valve casing for sliding movement relative thereto between open and closed positions of the conduit. The valve casing includes a pair of annular mounting flanges adapted to be connected to the conduit and a pair of annular U-shaped sealing rings. Each sealing ring is positioned radially inwardly of a respective mounting flange, and the sealing rings are positioned on opposite axial sides of the valve plate. Each sealing ring includes a web portion, an inner leg portion extending generally radially outwardly from the web portion and forming a sealing surface for the valve plate, and an outer leg extending generally radially outwardly from the web portion. Each outer leg is connected to a respective mounting flange. The valve casing defines therein an enclosed interior space through which cooling water is adapted to flow. A support device is positioned within the interior space for transmitting to at least one mounting flange the stress applied to the respective sealing surface by the valve plate. The support device includes a first end portion supported against and fixed to the one mounting flange and a second portion freely contacting the respective inner leg without attachment thereto. The support device has a cross-section so as to not appreciably interfere with or restrict the flow of cooling water within the interior space of the valve casing.

Gate valve for use in large size conduits

A plurality of regenerative hot blast stoves are operated under a staggered-parallel process wherein each stove is alternately operated under a fixed heating cycle wherein no cold blast is supplied to the stove and no hot blast issues therefrom and a fixed blasting cycle wherein cold blast is supplied to the stove and issues therefrom as hot blast. The initiation of the cycles of the stoves is staggered in time with respect to each other such that at any given time hot blast issues from more than one of the stoves but at different temperatures. The temperature of the hot blast issuing from the stoves is regulated to a predetermined temperature required at the blast furnace in a two-stage operation including a first stage wherein relatively cooler and warmer hot blast issuing from those stoves operating under blasting is mixed and controlled as a function of a first reference temperature greater than the temperature required at the blast furnace, and a second stage wherein cold blast is admixed with the hot blast mixture and controlled as a function of a second reference temperature equal to the temperature required at the blast furnace. Upon a lowering of the second reference temperature due to an operating requirement of the blast furnace, the first reference temperature is raised, whereby the second stage temperature regulation overlaps the first stage temperature regulation.

A housing, connectable to a pipe, has therein an opening, a chamber, a stationary sealing seat, and a movable sealing seat displaceable toward and away from the stationary sealing seat. A slide plate is movable from an open position, exterior of the housing, through the opening to a closed position between the sealing seats to block the pipe. A closing element closes the opening and seals the chamber when the slide plate is in the open position.

In a blast preheater for a blast furnace, a control housing has at least one open ended cylinder vertically mounted therein. The cylinder, or each of several cylinders has several axially spaced rows of circumferentially spaced slots, extending through the wall of the cylinder. A slider is slidable in the cylinder for opening, restricting or closing such slots. Wall means are mounted in the housing and are so arranged that in each position of the slider, a first part of the housing surrounding at least one of said rows of slots is separated by the wall means from at least one other part of the housing which communicates with the interior of the cylinder. Separate connectors communicate respectively with the so separated parts of the housing and connect the same to different parts of the blast preheater system, such as the inlet for cold air, under pressure; the inlet for combustion gas, for starting the preheater under lower pressure; the outlet for flue gas from the preheater; and the preheater outlet connecting the hot blast to the blast furnace. One of the new control housings can be provided for each of these lines, or for several of them. The new cylinder and slider system serves to fully open or fully close the line and also to regulate the line by restricting the slots.

Control apparatus for air blast preheaters of blast furnaces

A shutoff and control slide includes a cylinder having at least one row of circumferentially spaced elongated openings, and a sliding sleeve mounted for axial displacement in the cylinder. Rings are sealed to the inner surface of the cylinder on opposite axial sides of each row of openings, and each ring has an axially facing abutment surface. Abutment members, each having an axially facing abutment surface, extend outwardly from the sliding sleeve. Sealing members are provided on at least one of the ring and abutment member abutment surfaces.
