A dryer unit which is integrated as a module into a printed material guide system of a printing machine in order to facilitate two-sided drying of printed material is provided. The printed material guide system includes a guide surface which has a plurality of openings and an air system which is selectively operable in positive or negative pressure modes to assist the guiding of the printed material. The dryer module is arranged in an opening in the guide surface such that it heats at least one side of the printed material. At least one outlet opening is associated with the dryer module. The outlet opening is open into the plane of the guide surface and is coupled to a cooling system which is operable to provide cooling air to the dryer module.

A method for cleaning cylinders of a rotary printing press having washer and suction devices and an adjacently mounted dryer which shortens the down time during the cleaning operation and at the same time satisfies safety requirements. At the beginning of a cleaning process, the dryer is reduced from its normal operating output level to a predetermined lower operating output level which eliminates the risk of combustion with cleaning fluid vapors. At the end of the cleaning process, the operating output of the dryer is increased from its reduced level to its normal operating level in a significantly shortened period of time, as compared to conventional practice, resulting in reduced down time for the printing machine during the cleaning operation.

Method of cleaning a cylinder of a rotary printing press

A system for remote sensing, indicating and remote control provides for the non-smear guidance of sheets through a sheet-fed machine and is especially useful for printing machines which print on both sides of the sheets. Sheet guides are adjustable during machine operation from a control panel at a central location outside of the machine. The positions of the sheet guides are preferably displayed in direct comparison with zones of ink application. Also, the sheet guides are adjustable from the control panel so that the guides fall within the gaps between printed areas on the sheet. An immediate and graphic check of the sheet guides is provided. In a preferred embodiment, the positions of the sheet guides are indicated on a linear array of optical indicators, each indicator representing a respective boundary between adjacent inking zones, and two adjacent ones of the optical indicators being simultaneously activated when one of the sheet guides is adjusted approximately at the center of the inking zone defined by the boundaries represented by the two adjacent ones of the optical indicators.

Sheet guide arrangement in sheet-fed machines

For the rapid simultaneous engagement, disengagement and adjustment of all the applicator rollers at the plate cylinder of a printing machine, cam discs are mounted on the journals independently of the plate cylinder bearing. In an offset printing machine, the inking and damping rollers are each associated with their own cam discs. The cam discs are pivotable by means of drives, about the journals, with respect to adjustable stops for the engagement positions and end stops for the disengaged positions of the applicator rollers. The applicator rollers are mounted on rocker arms with respect to the stationary axis of the distributors preceding the applicator rollers and are adjustable with respect to the plate cylinder through the agency of adjustment means which co-operate with the cam discs. Adjustment of the applicator rollers during operation is effected by way of the cam discs which, in addition to the disengagement lobes, have cam zones for the roller engagement and adjustment.
